ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. - For the second straight game, the Seton Hall women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit to force overtime, but fell to Alabama, 62-56, on the second day of the Paradise Jam. Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) scored a game-high 17 points and played the full 45 minutes, breaking another single-game record.
After falling behind 43-33 with 9:54 to go in the second stanza, the Pirates (4-2) rattled off eight straight points to pull within two just over two minutes later. An old-fashioned three-point play by Crew made it 49-48 at the 2:44 mark, but the Crimson Tide's (4-2) lead ballooned back up to five with 1:42 on the clock.
Crew knocked down a pair from the foul line 22 seconds later to make it a one-possession game and SHU forced a miss at the other end of the floor on the ensuing possession. With 31 seconds to go, junior Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) dribbled to the foul line extended and found a wide-open Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) at the top of the key, and the junior drilled the clutch shot.
Out of a timeout, Alabama's Jasmine Robinson's contested shot from 12-feet out was off the mark, but the Tide regained the possession after the ball was deflected out of bounds. Off the inbounds, Meghan Perkins missed on a runner in the lane and a putback by Khristin Lee just rolled off the rim as time expired to force the extra frame.
Both teams had trouble knocking down shots in the overtime each squad finished with one field goal in the period. However, Alabama got to the free-throw line and connected on 7-of-8 attempts which proved to be the difference.
The Tide had to make a big rally in their first game of the tournament, and both teams struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half. Seton Hall held Alabama to just one field goal in the opening 7:54, but could not open up a bigger margin. Green's first three-pointer at the 6:36 mark of the half put the score back in favor of the Pirates, 17-15, and SHU led for the remainder of the period.
Alabama did a good job of bottling up Crew in the first, holding her to four. Green picked up the scoring slack, netting 10 of her 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting to propel SHU to a 26-24 halftime lead.
The Pirates held the Tide to just 31.1 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded Alabama, 46-33, with Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) pulling down 12 to lead all players. SHU committed 29 turnovers, which turned into 22 points.
The Pirates finish up play at the Paradise Jam on Saturday, November 26, against head coach Anne Donovan's alma-mater Old Dominion. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern standard time.
