CINCINNATI, Ohio. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak with its first conference victory of the season, a 51-44 triumph over Cincinnati on Saturday at Fifth Third Arena. The Pirates (8-16, 1-10) were led by a game-high 17 points from junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.).
Sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 for the Hall, which also broke a 17-game BIG EAST winless streak dating back to last season. Bjonee Reaves paced the Bearcats (8-15, 1-10) with 11 points.
Consecutive three-pointers by Morris and Crew helped the Pirates out to an 8-0 lead and forced a Cincinnati timeout at the 16:45 mark. Junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Crew each added another three-pointer to make it 14-0 with 14:21 left, and the Bearcats would not get on the board until a minute later on a lay-up by Jeanise Randolph.
Seton Hall held Cincinnati scoreless for another five minutes and 35 seconds before another Randolph basket that made it 18-4 with 7:41 on the clock. Morris connected on the Hall's fifth three-pointer of the half to extend the lead to 17 before Bjonee Reaves' lay-up made it 21-6 at the 4:45 mark.
Crew drained yet another from beyond the arc before adding a basket in the lane to give the Pirates a 26-9 lead at halftime.
The Bearcats were 4-of-20 from the field, 1-of-12 from three-point territory and 0-of-7 at the free throw line to go along with 12 turnovers in the opening stanza. Seton Hall picked up 13 points off giveaways while knocking down 6-of-12 from downtown. Cincinnati's nine points were the fewest allowed in the first half by the Hall this season.
Crew's jumper in the paint with 18:58 to play gave the Hall a 30-9 edge, its first lead of 20-plus points in the 2010-11 season. Morris hit from deep to push the spread to 24, but a lay-up from Randolph and a three from Kayla Cook brought the Bearcats to within 33-14 and forced a Pirates' timeout at the 17:17 mark.
A short jumper by freshman Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.) snapped both a 13-0 Cincinnati run and a scoreless drought of nine minutes and 51 seconds for the Hall, making it 35-22. Reaves countered with a three for the Bearcats to make it a 10-point game with 8:14 remaining, and Shelly Bellman later cut it to 42-34 on another bucket from beyond the arc with 3:25 on the clock.
With the lead down to three, freshman Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J) sank a corner three-pointer to make it 45-39 at the 1:24 mark. The Bearcats would get no closer than four the remainder of the way.
Cincinnati rebounded to shoot 32.7 percent for the game, while the Hall finished at 27.8 percent. The Pirates were successful on 13-of-15 free throws, a decisive advantage over the Bearcats' 4-of-13 effort.
Seton Hall will host its WBCA Pink Zone game on Wednesday night against Marquette at 7:00 p.m.
