SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A 60.0 percent shooting first half, including 9-of-15 from three-point territory, helped Villanova defeat the Seton Hall women's basketball team on Saturday, 62-54. A late rally by the Pirates (8-18, 1-12) from 27 points down ran out of time.
Junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) led the Hall in scoring for the fifth straight game with 17 points, while freshman Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) added 14. Lindsay Kimmel paced the Wildcats (10-16, 2-11) with 18 points, including five three-pointers.
Kimmel hit a trio of threes in the first two and a half minutes of the game as Villanova grabbed an 11-8 lead. The Wildcats kept bombing away and took their first double-digit lead at 29-18when Devon Kane hit a pair of free throws with 8:25 on the clock. After a lay-up by junior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) got the Hall back to within nine, Kane sparked a 16-2 run to end the half with a three-pointer, and the Wildcats led 45-22 at the break.
Villanova recorded assists on 14 of their 15 first-half field goals while coming close to its season scoring average of 50.6 points per game.
The Wildcats led comfortably throughout the second half and held a 56-40 advantage with 3:45 remaining in the game. Seton Hall put together a 14-4 run, capped off by a basket from Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.), to get to within six with 20 seconds remaining, but the game would get no closer.
After its scorching first half, Villanova shot just 21.1 percent in the second stanza. The Pirates finished the day at 38.2 percent and won the rebounding battle, 35-28.
Seton Hall will travel to #2/2 Connecticut on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
