HARTFORD, Conn. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team tied a school record with 11 three-pointers in an 80-59 loss to top-ranked Connecticut on Tuesday night at the XL Center. The Pirates (8-19, 1-13) are back in action on Saturday at Louisville.
Freshman Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.) scored a career-high 14 points for the Hall, while sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a personal-best four three-pointers to tie her career-high of 12 points. Maya Moore paced the Huskies (27-1, 14-0) with 20 points.
The Pirates hung in early and trailed 10-5 after Johnson sank a three-pointer at the 14:29 mark. A putback by senior Kashmere Joseph (London, England) made it a 14-8 game two minutes later, but a quick 9-0 run by the Huskies stretched it to a 15-point game with 9:10 remaining.
Johnson converted a three-point play and junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) answered a Moore three-pointer with one of her own as the Hall closed to within 26-14. Wood later cut it to nine with a driving bucket in the lane, and the Pirates again were down just nine after a transition lay-up by Johnson with 3:52 left made it 32-23.
After the Huskies pushed their edge back to 13, junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) hit consecutive shots that made it 36-27 with 1:07 left in the first half. Moore scored down low for the final basket before halftime to give Connecticut a 38-27 lead.
Johnson's 12 points at the break led the Pirates and set a new career-high. Stefanie Dolson scored a dozen points to pace the Huskies.
Moore and Bria Hartley kick-started a 12-2 run with consecutive threes as Connecticut assumed a 50-29 lead and forced a Seton Hall timeout with 16:47 remaining. The Huskies tacked on the next six points to stretch the lead to 27.
Aftter trailing by 31, the Pirates caught fire down the stretch, draining five three-pointers over the final four minutes.
Seton Hall previously hit 11 three-pointers on Feb. 13, 2008 against Syracuse.
The Pirates shot 38.3 percent overall and 50.0 percent from distance, while the Huskies checked in at 42.9 percent overall and 30.0 percent from the arc. Connecticut was 20-for-24 at the free throw line while the Hall was just 2-for-3.
