LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team came up short against Louisville on Saturday, falling 59-49 at the KFC Yum! Center. The Pirates (8-20, 1-14) were led by a career-high 19 points from freshman Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.).
Junior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded her third career double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Hall. Monique Reid paced the Cardinals (19-10, 10-5) with 16 points, while Keshia Hines posted 12 points and 10 boards.
The Hall forced five early turnovers and led 6-2 behind three field goals from Johnson. The Cardinals bounced back with seven unanswered points, and they extended to a 13-8 lead on a bucket from Monique Reid. Johnson kept the Pirates close, however, draining a three-pointer at the 11:18 mark to make it a two-point game.
Louisville held the Hall to just one point over the next seven minutes and 32 seconds on the way to a 21-12 lead. It was still a nine-point edge when junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) knocked down a three, and junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) followed with a bucket to make it 26-21 with 1:34 left. Reid hit a pair of free throws to give the Cardinals a 28-21 lead at halftime.
Louisville took its first double-digit lead of the game when a Keshia Hines putback made it 34-24, forcing a Seton Hall timeout at the 17:42 mark. It was a 20-point game after Asia Taylor pushed it to 48-28 on a bucket with 11:05 to go.
The Pirates kept fighting, and it was down to a 16-point deficit when Johnson sank a three at the 3:48 mark to make it 56-40. Time would run out on the Hall, however, as it could not get within single-digits the remainder of the way.
Louisville shot 42.6 from the floor while holding the Pirates to 33.3 percent. Both squads committed 20 turnovers.
The Pirates close out the regular season on Monday night when they host Rutgers at 7:00 p.m. Senior Kashmere Joseph (London, England) will be honored before the contest in the Senior Night ceremony.
