SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The potential game-tying three-pointer by sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) was just off the mark at the buzzer as Providence escaped with a 58-55 win over the Seton Hall women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (7-15, 0-9) are back in action on Tuesday night when they visit #8 Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m.
Junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) led the Hall with 14 points, while junior Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) added 12 points and eight rebounds. Symone Roberts scored 14 to pace the Friars (10-11, 3-6). There were 18 lead changes and 13 ties in the contest and neither team led by more than four.
Mi-Khida Hankins gave Providence an 8-5 lead at the 13-minute mark as both teams struggled with turnovers and missed shots early on. Green and Crew made consecutive field goals to put the Hall up one, but Brianna Edwards scored underneath to put the Friars ahead, 10-9, with 9:50 to go.
The Pirates tied the game at 12 when senior Kashmere Joseph (London, England) hit a free throw at the 4:46 mark, and Crew buried a jumper from the wing moments later to give the Hall a two-point edge. Lola Wells answered with a three-pointer for Providence, and she later hit from 17-feet with 2:35 on the clock to make it 17-14. The Friars took a 17-16 lead into the half.
Seton Hall hit just 19.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while Providence connected on 33.3 percent of its attempts. The Pirates forced 12 turnovers and outrebounded the Friars 24-17.
Green started the second half with a three-point play to give the Hall a 19-17 advantage 32 seconds in. The Friars ran off four straight before Joseph got loose underneath for a lay-up to even the score at 21 with 18 minutes to play.
Hankins scored in transition to give Providence a 27-23 lead, but Crew and Morris responded with baskets to even the score back up. After a steal by Morris, Crew scored on a putback to give the Pirates a 29-27 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining. After the Friars tied it, Green hit four straight free throws to make it a 10-2 run and give the Hall a 33-29 spread.
Wells connected from deep with 11:45 left to put Providence ahead, 34-33, but freshman Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) countered with a three of her own to retake the lead. Sophomore Terry Green (Brentwood, N.Y.) sank a floater to stretch it to four before the Friars' Chandler McCabe hit from beyond the arc, cutting it to 38-37. A steal and lay-up by Alicia Cropper gave Providence a 41-40 lead and forced a timeout by the Pirates with 8:34 left.
The teams traded the lead back and forth before Roberts buried a three for the Friars, making it 51-49 with 4:44 left. Crew was successful on both ends of a 1-and-1 a minute and a half later, but Hankins put the Friars back up two with a driving score on the other end. Joseph quickly answered with a lay-up for the Pirates that tied it at 53 with 2:25 on the clock.
Roberts sliced to the hoop for a lay-up at the 1:10 mark to push Providence in front, but Joseph again scored down low for the Hall to tie it at 55 with 36 seconds left. Hankins made 1-of-2 free throws with 16 seconds left for a one-point Providence lead, and Simmons came up empty on the other end for the Pirates. After Roberts made two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining, Crew quickly advanced the ball down court to Morris, but her three-point attempt was just off the mark.
Both teams found their offensive rhythm in the second half, with the Friars shooting 60.0 percent and the Pirates making 51.7 percent. The Hall finished the day with a 34-30 edge on the glass.
