Women's Basketball Readies Auctions, Raffles For Pink Zone

As part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's initiative to raise cancer awareness and show support to those stricken within the coaching profession, fans are encouraged to wear pink to the Feb. 16 women's basketball game between Seton Hall and Marquette at Walsh Gymnasium.
Seton Hall will wear pink shooting shirts and pink uniforms as part of the annual Pink Zone game. Cancer survivors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony, and giveaways to fans will include mini-balls, lanyards and t-shirts. The "most spirited" fan will win a gift certificate to Cryan's Beef and Ale House, while the "most spirited" student will be awarded a 22-inch flat screen television.
A large raffle of items donated by corporations will highlight the evening, with all money raised to be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. There will also be live and online auction fundraisers.
The Seton Hall women's basketball team was lucky enough to play against the late Coach Yow's North Carolina State Wolfpack three times throughout her tenure at the school. The final meeting was played at the brand new Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Dec. 20, 2008 - no one knew it then, but it would be the last game Coach Yow was on the sidelines.
The current Seton Hall staff has several personal connections to Coach Yow and her fight throughout the years battling breast cancer. Head coach Anne Donovan played for Coach Yow on the 1986 World Championship team and the 1988 Olympic Team, winning gold medals both times. Assistant coach Jenny Palmateer had an outstanding four-year career playing for Coach Yow before spending 10 years as an assistant coach on her staff. Nanna Rivers, the coordinator of basketball operations, also played for Coach Yow at N.C. State.
Since the inception of the WBCA's Kay Yow Fund and Think Pink (the name has since been changed to the Pink Zone), the Seton Hall women's basketball program has been dedicated to raising funds to help fight to end the disease that took Coach Yow's life. The Pink Zone game is about so much more than pink uniforms or pink shoelaces; it is about raising awareness to make sure women are getting mammograms, keeping up with their health and know that if they are diagnosed with the disease, there is somewhere to turn. Over the past three years, the Pirates have raised over $10,000.
