A Day in the Life of a PIRATE
3/16/2011 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Below is the Seton Hall Women's basketball team's blog ‘A Day in the Life of a PIRATE.’ Throughout the season, a different player on the team gave an inside look at the practices, classes, and daily life of a Women's basketball player.
Now that the season is over, I think we can all take this time to reflect. As we all know this season has not gone in our favor. We all wish that this season could have been better, I know I do. We all wish we could have made that shot or pushed that extra mile to the finish. At the start of the season, I was in a funk. I was in a state of being lost and could not find my ground or belonging on the team. It also did not help that I missed all of preseason do to Achilles tendonitis. As the season went on, I decided to change my attitude for the better and start finding my love for the game. I did just that. During the end of the season, we lost many players due to numerous injuries. I looked at this as a time to step up my game and help my team in any way possible.
I was able to do this during the Pink Zone game vs. Marquette. The Pink game is always special to me. My family has been affected by breast cancer numerous times. My great-aunt died from the disease and my grandmother survived twice. There is always a chance that any women or myself could suffer from the disease so to payback and meet survivors is always a treat in my eyes. Before the game, my team and I were able to meet survivors and sign balls and other memorabilia. Knowing that survivors and their families would be at the game gave me the incentive to give them the opportunity to watch a great basketball game. I was able to help my team stay in the game by getting the first double-double of my college career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. I did not see my double-double as a personal best, but as 10 points that I could give my team since one of our leading scorers was out with an injury. I knew I had to step up with my stats to make up for the points and rebounds we were missing.
With the season over, I realized that there is a lot that I can do to help our team reach our goals next year. Over the past years, I struggled with keeping my “eye on the prize.” This will not be the case during the offseason. I can only speak for myself, but I intend to get healthy and work as hard as I can this offseason. I know that my team is disappointed in how the season ended up, but I do know that with the ups and many downs, we became closer as a team.

Hi everyone my name is Tajay Ashmeade, however I am more known to everyone as TJ. I play the five position (center) for the Pirates. I am a junior college transfer from Trinity Valley Community College in Texas. I also play for my national Jamaican women’s basketball team. I am so very excited to be here at Seton Hall University, playing under the wonderful and legendary coach Anne Donovan.
The transition from playing at a junior college to playing in one of the best if not the best women’s basketball conferences in the country was very hard for me. I am still learning to this day. For me it is like two totally different worlds. At my junior college the game was not as physical, fast or efficient as it is in the BIG EAST Conference. Every day is a day that I learn and a day for me to get better. I am happy that I have such great coaches and teammates to help guide me through this journey.
My teammates have been very supportive in helping me understand the conference and the game better. Even though I am a junior, I feel more like a freshman because every day I learn or experience something new. It has been a tough year for us so far, however we have not stopped fighting and that’s one thing that I love about my team, including the coaches: no one gives up on each other. This is something that I admire and love. We knew all we had to do was to keep our heads up and keep the fight going and we would get something out of this season, and that is exactly what happened when we played Cincinnati. We went into the game with our heads held high and the fight in our heart to take home that W and we did. We held Cincinnati to zero points in the first couple of minutes of the first half and held onto the lead the rest of the game to take home the victory. It was a great game and a great win and I was so proud of my teammates for giving it all they got.
So far I have learned so much from being here at Seton Hall, however my team and I still have a ways to go and we are ready and prepared for anything that comes our way, because I know and my team knows that we have what it takes to put Seton Hall woman’s basketball on top.
Love and respect,
TJ
Hello Pirate Fans!!!
My name is Nicosia Henry and I am a freshman guard for the Seton Hall women’s basketball team from Chicago, Illinois. Unfortunately I have not decided on a major to study yet but I do want to become a fashion designer or fashion coordinator. I’ve been inspired by the best - Anna Wintour is my favorite - and I hope to reach beyond her achievements. Hopefully as the years go on I will be placed in classes that will lead me to my future plans.
This year as a freshman I have learned a lot, especially from the new coaching staff and from each of the players. It was difficult for me in the beginning to gather my talent and mental mindset of basketball back, but I have overcome the situation and been making progress each day in practice and on the court. I have also discovered that my teammates are the best group of females to hang out with “HANDS DOWN”. They are hilarious when it comes to the locker room and sisters when we are all off the court. Jazzmine Johnson’s birthday had passed eleven days ago and the upper classmen took her out and paid for her meal. Kashmere Joseph’s birthday had also passed five days ago and again the other upper classmen took her out and treated her to a nice dinner. This just shows the kind heart that the Pirates have for one another. But when it is time to get ready for a game you can most definitely count on them to get you in tune by allowing them to talk to you and preparing you for what needs to be done in the game.
As the course of the season continues, the pirates have had some up and down games, but that has not stopped us from competing against other good teams. From the coaches’ motivating comments, each player is determined to finish this season on a good note. All these trials and tribulations that the Lord has put us through are for us to persevere through them to succeed in life.
I’m looking forward to seeing you attend the rest of the games that we have left and continue to support us over the next few years in Walsh Gym.

Hey Pirate Fans !
My name is Terry Green and I am a sophomore guard for the SHU Women’s Basketball team. I’m a communications major focusing on broadcasting and visual arts. I aspire to work for ESPN one day if I am not still playing basketball. There has been a lot of change to adjust to due to the new coaching staff and system, but I have adjusted pretty well.
I love my team and don’t consider these twelve other girls as just my teammates, they’re my sisters. Other than playing together we do so many things off the court together. Each and every one of them has a different personality and that’s what brings us closer together, from our freshmen to our lone senior. Speaking of freshmen, those little rugrats, they are like five little sisters I never had. They have the looks of angels, but looks are DECEIVING! But I love them unconditionally. As opposed to my class, the sophomores, where there are only three: Brittany Morris (My Southern Belle), Alexandra Maseko (My African Sister) and me. Those two are quite the characters, but seeing that there are only three of us we have to stick together because the little freshmen like to gang up on people! Our junior class is also quite the group with Jasmine Crew, Kandice Green, Tajay Ashmeade and Whitney Wood. Jasmine is just a comedian, when you’re down and out all you have to do is look at her and you’re PERFECTLY FINE. Kandice, she’s always laughing when nothing is funny, she has a bubbly personality and is easy to get along with. Tajay is the crazy on the team, a GOOD crazy not a bad one, she is another one that will give you a laugh when needed. And last but not least Whitney Wood, if you need anything about the latest celebrity news she’s your girl, she knows it ALL. Some teams usually have MORE than one senior, but we got lucky enough to have just ONE in Kashmere Joseph - honestly she exaggerates life. If there was an award for being DRAMATIC she would definitely have my vote. I know when she leaves it will definitely be sad, she’s basically like a mother to all of us.
Ohhhh, the COACHES!!! They are pretty funny themselves. I think that’s where we get some of our personality from. From Coach Donovan to DOBO they have helped us adjust to the change. They basically take the places of our parents and are there when we need them. In the beginning of the school year the University experienced a traumatic event, but our coaches were there to comfort, support and help us through what had occurred. They are really role models to the entire team and I appreciate them greatly.
Well that’s all the time I have today PIRATES FANS, you can catch me on the court. Hope you have a good day. And remember GO PIRATES!

Hey Pirate Fans!!!
My name is Kandice Green and I’m a junior for SHU women’s basketball. We recently went on a trip to Chicago to play DePaul University. The experience that I had going to De Paul was definitely different from the first time that I was there as a freshmen. The weather was a lot colder than last time. I’m talking only nine degrees. Watching my teammate Whitney in that weather was hilarious. For those who do not know Whitney, she is from California and she has never felt weather like that before. She was screaming how she could not breathe on the walk to Johnny Rockets to grab dinner. I was really happy to see the big smile on Nicosia’s face when she landed back in her home city. She was so excited. I think I can speak for everyone when I say we enjoyed meeting her new baby sister. NEW PIRATE!
The game against DePaul was a tough one. We were down by 20 points with nine minutes left in the game. We weren’t really playing our game. We forgot to get back in transition, which was bad because DePaul is a team that is good at transition. Another thing that hurt us was our turnovers because DePaul converted on them. We knew going into the locker room that we were down by 30, and that we would have to work really hard to get back into the game. In the second half we came out fired up and ready to get back in the game. We stopped their key players from scoring and rebounding. Unlike the first half we got back in transition and communicated more. Though we didn’t win the game I think we all learned a lot. We learned that we have to put a whole 40 minutes into a game instead of just 20.
To wrap this up we are looking forward to the upcoming games. Hope to see all of you Pirates fans in Walsh Gym. Get well Swaby!!!

Hello Pirates’ Fans:
First of all, I hope everyone is having a great new year so far. My name is Elaine Swaby. I am a freshman at Seton Hall University, and a forward on the women’s basketball team. The transition from high school to college was not the easiest but with the support and help of teammates, coaches and faculty I was able to get through my first college semester and earn good grades in my courses. We are very excited about our BIG EAST games and are now itching for a win to start some momentum moving forward in the tournament.
Four days ago on January 12 in our game against Pittsburgh I landed funny after shooting a layup and injured my knee. The next day I went to get an MRI and I was told some news that I was not shocked to hear. Since I’ve been through a couple knee injuries/surgeries before I knew something wasn’t right. I was told that I tore my meniscus and I would need surgery. Even though this news was not shocking it was disappointing because we just started our BIG EAST games and I would need about two weeks to recover. I look forward to cheering my team on in future games and practices that I will not be able to participate in until I am able to get back on the court with them.
Off the court our team tries to do fun things together. With our school being so close to New York City we were able to go to see a play called Memphis after practice. We hopped on the train and had to walk ten blocks to the restaurant where we were going to eat. This normally wouldn’t be a problem but my teammate Jazzmine Johnson and I were the two “cripples” of the team and we were strugglinggggggggggggggg to get down those blocks. To make the time fly by me and Jazz told jokes and held onto each other for dear life trying to make it to dinner. When we finally arrived it was nice to feel the warmth and spend some good time with my teammates and coaches. Memphis was really good also, we were kept laughing from beginning to end. (I recommend everyone to go see. :-)) After the play concluded we had to rush back to the train station in order to catch a train that was leaving in 15 minutes or else we would have to wait an hour for the next one. The coaches knew that there was no way that my fellow “cripple” partner and I would make it back to the train station in time, so Ginger Fulton our Senior Associate Athletics Director, was kind enough to get in a cab with us and get us back to the station. We caught up with the rest of the crew on the train and finally made it back to campus.
Not only are our Coaches great to be around on the court, they are also really fun off the court. I am more than happy that I chose Seton Hall I definitely feel like I am in the Right Place at the Right Time!

Hi fellow bloggers, students and fans. My name is Jasmine Crew. I am a junior transfer at Seton Hall University, and a guard on the women’s basketball team. There have been so many changes and adjustments in transferring to a new university, but I have to say that most of the transition has been smooth and positive. The administration and faculty have been very accommodating which has made the student part of being a student-athlete both rewarding and challenging in the classroom.
The challenges and rewards of being a student at Seton Hall are as great on the athletic end of my settling in here. Coach Donovan has proven herself to be as advertised, and more! She is professional and tough, but understanding and helpful. As a team, we all recognize that she is here to turn this program around and, personally, I am thankful to be a part of it. We know that Coach does not like to lose and that it is our responsibility to leave it all out on the court, whether it is at practice or game time!
On the court, we are working very hard, everyday, to bring Seton Hall women’s basketball back to a level of respectability in the BIG EAST. We are part of the best conference in the country, and proud to be a part of it. The time will end when opponents will just pencil us in as a ‘W’! From Coach and her staff, to each one of us, we will make sure that changes. Hopefully, Seton Hall fans and community will support us in our efforts to rise in our conference.
In closing, I need to mention our classmate, Jessica Moore, who lost her life in a senseless shooting just before the season started. Most of our team was in attendance at that event, and we have dedicated our season to our fallen classmate. Being there that night taught me a lot about life and what is important. In every life experience, there are lessons to be learned, even in tragedy. The most glaring lesson, for me, is that life is not always fair and we must live and love each day like it may be our last, taking nothing for granted. The dynamics of this game that we love to play is also a microcosm of how we will play the game of life.
So, from the Pirates to all of you, the time is now!

My Name is Tiffani Blackman. I am a from Toledo, Ohio and I am a freshman on the women’s basketball team. December has been a very challenging month for me and the team. We played some tough games and worked hard to finish the first semester off strong academically. Also during this month we lost a couple tough games but bounced back before we all went home for the Christmas break. On December 22 we beat LaSalle, giving us great momentum going into Big East play. Following this game, I was able to go home for the holidays. Being home was wonderful and I really enjoyed spending time with my family and close friends. Although we only had four days to be home with our families, I was very grateful and appreciative to have that opportunity because some was not as fortunate to be able to go home to spend Christmas with their families. Alex Maseko and Kashmere Joseph are both from overseas and are not able to go home and see family but were able to go home with friends for a holiday dinner.
While at home over the break the east coast experienced the biggest snow storm in a long time, some called it a blizzard. This caused a lot of problems for me and a few of my teammates who flew home for the holidays. All flights coming into New Jersey, Philly and New York were cancelled. The flight I was supposed to take back to New Jersey was cancelled on Monday and after waiting at the airport to fly out I ended up taking the bus back to South Orange in order to make it in time for our game on Wednesday against Rhode Island. This 10 hour bus ride was not the highlight of my holiday break. Through a transfer, wait time, small seats with out leg room and snoring, I finally made it back about 2 hours before the game and was able to help support my team to a double overtime win.
Overall my Christmas break back home was wonderful and I experienced a lot with the airports and how crazy it can be during the holidays. Being at Seton Hall I have experienced a lot of different things that I wouldn’t trade for anything. We have a wonderful coaching staff and group of girls who make these experiences worth going through. I hope you enjoy the holidays and can’t wait to see you at the game!

Hi Seton Hall Fans!
I hope everyone is enjoying the festive season! My name is Alexandra Maseko and I am a red-shirt freshman from Harare, Zimbabwe and I have the task of following up on such inspiring and entertaining blogs of my teammates.
Yes, I came all the way from Africa to play basketball at Seton Hall and it has been the most unbelievable experience for me so far! Having also witnessed a coaching change in the short time of my being here, I remain extremely excited for this season and all of our future endeavors. It seemed so surreal to hear Anne Donovan’s name announced as our new head coach because back home in Harare I used to stay up to watch the WNBA and college games that came on TV, (often at 3am because of the time difference) and now the woman I never even thought I would get the chance to meet was my coach!
With all this excitement came the quick realization that Coach D means business. The team and its staff have been working hard to take the Seton Hall program to new heights and realize our shared desire for success. We have been given a wonderful opportunity to play the sport we all love under such a great coaching staff with an uplifting sense of humor The transition to US basketball was a difficult one for me but I find that my learning experiences didn’t end on the court. From going through plays with my teammates Jasmine Crew and Kashmere Joseph in the dorms using teddy bears as players, to in-depth discussions about our past games and practices, my teammates have been invaluable to me integrating into Seton Hall basketball.
On another note, it is that time of year again when the team has to buckle down academically and conquer our finals. The team has made a commitment to be in good standing academically and the girls are working hard to fulfill this goal off the court as well. After practices the ladies are always scurrying to study hall and to make appointments with tutors and I feel as though the hard work will pay-off! (Provided we manage to stay off facebook long enough to get our work done, particularly in “Club Walsh” as our library is affectionately known!)
Finally, when finals are finally done, the team and its staff get to disperse for the Christmas break and indulge in a little family time and home cooking, a time that I know many of the girls appreciate, especially Whit, Tiff, Nic, and Nanna who live far from NJ and don’t get the opportunity to see family too often. It is a difficult time of year for me because I am away from my family but as part of Seton Hall women’s basketball, we are already one giant family and I am looking forward to enjoying the deserted school campus with the team, and the food they bring back from home! The team is like an extended family complete with mother figures and babies (cough –freshman!) But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nevertheless, the break will be used to intensely prepare for the BIG EAST conference games. Stay tuned to watch our family and team grow and begin to reach new heights.

Hey Pirates’ fans:
I hope everyone is well. My name is a Kashmere Joseph and I am a senior forward on the women’s basketball team. A lot has changed since I first came here from England four years ago. We have a new coaching staff this season and I’m the only senior on the team this year. We are excited about the rest of season and the upcoming Big East games.
Four weeks ago on November 15 we were in practice and I was playing defense. Whitney Wood was attempting to pass to someone on her team, when I went for the deflection and MY THUMB BROKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SCREAMED IN PAIN AS I FELL TO THE FLOOR AND GRABBED MY HAND. (Joking, I really didn’t drop to the floor. :-) )
At first it was very hard to do a lot of things I didn’t even think about like doing my hair, tying my shoe laces , putting my earrings in and zipping up my jacket. Who knew you needed your thumb for so many things? But my teammates have helped me especially Jasmine Crew and Alex Maseko and I know they are sick of hearing me say, “I would help you BUT I only have one hand”.
Since then I’ve had the pleasure of doing sprints, abs and squats during practice thanks to our athletic trainer Crista. I’ve also been cheering my teammates on from the side line during games. One of the most difficult things is not being able to contribute on the court especially because it’s my senior season and I will never get a chance to get that time back again. You really start to appreciate the game of basketball and the opportunity you were given to play at Seton Hall when you are watching it all happen from the side lines.
As one of the captains of this team I have tried to make sure that we fight hard every day in practices and in games and that we are proud to wear the Seton Hall name on our chests. I can’t wait for my hand to heal so I can be back on the court to help my teammates fight hard this season.
I’m looking forward to Coach Donovan’s first Big East season and my final Big East season. Let’s Go Pirates!
Let me tell you a little bit about one of the games that really stood out, that again, I watched from the bench. We flew to Virginia the first weekend in December to play William & Mary. I remember walking in and noticing how yellow their gym was. When it came game time, the team was feeling confident about the next 40 minutes. However, the first half was not too great and we ended the half down by seven.
In the locker room at halftime, we knew we had to fight back because not only did we want the win, but we had a seven-hour bus trip back to New Jersey, and we did not want that to be miserable. We came back in the second half and shot 46% to tie the game at the end of regulation which showed a lot of heart, determination, pride, and hustle.

Hello Pirate Family,
First and foremost I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and welcome to my “Day in the Life of a Pirate” blog. I am Jazzmine Johnson, a freshman shooting guard from Columbia, South Carolina. The transition from high school to college was not as difficult as I imagined but more of a stepping stone to becoming more independent and learning to adapt. My teammates have helped a lot with just being there during this adjustment so I am well acclimated to college life.
Enough about the transition from high school, I am excited to inform you all that my team was fortunate enough to take a trip to Freeport, Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam. When we arrived we were welcomed with nice traditional music played by the Bahamians on drums and other musical instruments. The energy they gave put me in the mindset of being back in SC because they welcomed us with open arms.
Our second day in the Bahamas, the team was able to partake in banana boat rides and jet skiing. This turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip. Elaine, Meg, Whit, Kash, Alex and I were pulled by a boat in the sea riding an inflatable boat. Our instructor took a sharp turn and we all flew from the banana boat. In shock I grabbed the first person I saw, Kashmere Joseph, and this would turn out to be my first mistake.
For one, Kash does not know how to swim and she injured her hand so she only had one to support herself. Seeing Kash trying to swim had to be one of the funniest sights of this entire journey. Finally, when we calmed down and proceeded to get back on the boat, we did not keep in mind that doing so, we would have to balance both sides, so we Pirates decide to all pull on one side, hoping to make it back on the boat. Boy were we wrong! The boat tipped a second time and back under the water we went. We finally got it together and got back on the boat to head back to shore.
Following the banana boat ride was the jet skiing. Coach Donovan drove while accompanied by Ms. Ginger riding on the back. When they came back they were drenched with water. Before I could even ask what had happened it was clear that Coach pulled a little too hard on the gas and tipped over the Jet ski. So when I drove with Kash on the back she yelled the whole time telling me not to make any sudden turns. Watching everyone have fun and laughing was exciting and helped us bond as a team. I did not expect the coaches to be so laid back and amusing because all of them are characters who never share a dull moment. This was an experience that comes once in a lifetime and I enjoyed every moment of it.
Now on the basketball side of things I have from this past weekend that nothing just comes to anyone, but you have to put in that extra time and dedication to become better than the next. As a team we still have a lot to learn but I think our eyes have been opened and we all are determined to put in that extra time and effort. The team is coming along pretty well with learning one another on and off the court. This is only the beginning of Pirates basketball so please continue to stick around to watch us grow.
Have a blessed and wonderful day,
Jazz Johnson #15
Hey Pirates Fans,
I hope you all are having a great week. My name is Brittany Morris and I am a sophomore shooting guard. The season is here and we are ready to hit the floor running. The excitement that our team has for this season is just out of this world and the people around us have really made a great effort to help us get to where we are trying to go.
In our first three weeks of practice everyone worked really hard and pushed one another to stay at a high level of intensity. This was the beginning of a new team! The feeling of everyone being on the same page and being on board to achieve the same goals was the best feeling a player and team could have.
Since we have started this new season, I feel a big thing that we have been working through is finding our identity as players, but also as a team. This will be a big part of our team’s success because once we all get a firm understanding of who we are as players it will make playing on the court so much easier. In our first game this year against Florida Gulf Coast, I realized that we have really come a long way on defense and have really mastered how to play Pirates defense. There is still room for improvement and there are still things we need to work on as a team.
There are great things that we have already as a team to identify ourselves. We are hard workers who help each other as much as we can, bringing high intensity levels while in practice talking and communicating. Also, we are great at creating hustle plays and doing the little things that matter such as boxing out and rebounding. The one thing that is very special to our team is that we play as a team and are very unselfish when it comes to playing Pirates’ basketball. We are holding one another accountable for our actions and try to get each other involved on the floor in any way possible.
Beginning a new season under a new coaching staff and being a player from the past season, I feel that we have really grown as a team. We have also come together and built a strong force to have a successful season. I feel that we show two of the most important things a team should have to win, heart and passion.
As we were doing community service last week at the veteran’s hospital and walked down the stairs we read the words on the walls and words that we all held on to were “attitude determines altitude” and this is a big theme that our team will use to gain success this year. As I leave you I hope you have learned a few things about our team, who we are and what we are trying to do. As a Pirates fan we hope you are on the sidelines in Walsh Gymnasium to cheer us on this season! Go Pirates!
Have a great week!

I hope all is well. I want to welcome you to the “A Day in the Life of a Pirate” blog. I am Ka-Deidre Simmons, a freshman point guard here at the Hall. Transitioning into college, I had to make a lot of changes to my daily routine. Academically, I have had to adjust to a changing class schedule, juggling meetings and participating in various freshman events. The life of a student-athlete is a busy one. Not too long after getting into the swing of this new routine the excitement of my first college practice was right around the corner.
The day of that practice, I was nervously excited for what was to come in Walsh Gymnasium. I can honestly say that I have never worked that hard in a practice before. I could feel the difference between high school basketball and college, Big East ball immediately. It was a challenging practice but with the encouragement of my teammates and coaching staff I managed to make through. The level of play and the standards that I am going to be held to as a point guard are very demanding. I am now responsible for leading my team on the court. I am excited to step up to that challenge and fulfill that future goal under the guidance of Coach Donovan.
Coming to Seton Hall and playing for an Olympic gold medal winning coach is very exciting. I have been given the amazing opportunity to play under head coach Anne Donovan. In the short time I have been playing for her I have learned so much. My teammates and I are lucky to have her wealth of knowledge at our disposal. Coach Donovan pushes us in every practice to bring out the best in us. Every practice I can see our team’s progression towards our goals.
The team has been a great asset in helping me adjust to my life at SHU, not only on the court but off the court as well. Bonding with the team has been a big help in easing this move into my new lifestyle. We have had some great times in these few short months here at school. From late night trips to the movies to adventures in New York City, I have made some great memories with my new teammates. I look forward to making more during the season on the road and during games.
During the season, I hope to continue to grow as a player and to improve my game more every day. I also hope that we have a safe and healthy season so that we can accomplish our goals that were set out for this year.
