SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team was no-hit by Pittsburgh's Cory Berliner as they were beaten by a 9-0 score in five innings in its BIG EAST opener. The Pirates (12-15, 0-2) were then shutout in game-two, 6-0.
The Panthers (21-6) sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning of game one and put seven runs on the board, and never looked back.
Berliner allowed just one base-runner on a walk in the bottom of the first inning to improve to 6-2. Sophomore Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) took the loss (5-9) after giving up six runs without retiring a batter.
Pittsburgh went to work right away in game two, going on top, 1-0, on a Yvette Bravo RBI single. Kelly Hmiel made it 3-0 with a two-run shot in the third, and the Panthers tacked on insurance runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Karlyn Jones moved to 8-2 after pitching a two-hitter and striking out eight. Freshman Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) dropped to 5-3.
Freshman Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and senior Nalin Bennett (East Syracuse, N.Y.) were the only SHU players to record hits.
The Pirates will look to avoid the sweep as they take on Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 27, at noon.
