
Women's Basketball Eliminated From BIG EAST Championship By Syracuse

HARTFORD, Conn. - The No. 16 seed Seton Hall women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Friday with a 74-44 loss to No. 9 seed Syracuse in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship at XL Center. The Orange will advance to face No. 8 Georgetown on Saturday.
The Pirates (8-22) were led by senior Kashmere Joseph (London, England), junior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) and sophomore Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) with eight points each. Iasia Hemingway paced four Orange (22-8) in double-figures with 17 points.
The Hall grabbed a 4-0 lead in less than two minutes as freshman Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) and Crew hit mid-range jumpers. Hemingway had five early free throws to help the Orange move ahead, 9-6, and Carmen Tyson-Thomas, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, scored inside to push it to five.
Junior Whitney Wood (Santa Margarita, Calif.) followed a pair of three-pointers by Morris with one of her own as the Pirates stormed back for a 17-15 lead by the 11:09 mark. Syracuse bounced back strong, putting together a 16-5 spurt over a span of seven minutes and 24 seconds to seize a 31-22 advantage. The Orange took a 33-24 lead into the break.
Free throws were the difference in the first half, as Syracuse went 10-for-12 from the stripe while Seton Hall was just 1-for-4.
Tasha Harris and Erica Morrow opened the second stanza with three-pointers as the Orange began to pull away. Tyson-Thomas pushed the lead over 20 for the first time with a three-point play, making it 50-29 with 14:10 to go, and the Pirates could not make a charge the rest of the way.
Syracuse shot 45.1 percent from the field and hit 6-of-12 three-point attempts, while the Hall was limited to 30.6 percent overall and 25.0 percent from long range. The Orange held a 39-25 on the glass.
