BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped its second straight match to Virginia Tech, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21), on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (3-5) close the Hokie Invitational against American this evening at 5:00 p.m.
Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led the team with nine kills and 21 assists. Senior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) posted seven kills and a .429 attack percentage in her first start of the year.
The Hokies doubled up SHU, 14-7, in the first set and continued seemed poised to cruise to a first set victory. A Shelbey Manthorpe kill and service ace helped the Pirates close within 22-19, but Virginia Tech held on to win the frame, 25-22.
Set two was hotly contested and saw the score tied up nine times. Seton Hall would take a 17-16 lead after a Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) kill, but with the score knotted at 18 the Hokies scored the final seven points to put the Pirates on the brink.
Seton Hall took its largest lead of the afternoon after a kill by Stacey Manthorpe made it 17-14. Virginia Tech responded with four straight to overcome the deficit and completed the sweep with a 25-21 set victory.
