Volleyball Topples American, 3-0

BLACKSBURG, Va.  - The Seton Hall volleyball team finished the Hokie Invitational on a high note, topping American, 3-0, (25-20 25-21, 25-15), on Saturday. The Pirates (4-5) return home to face Hofstra on Tuesday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Freshman Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had 11 kills on a .625 clip to lead the offense. Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) posted nine kills to go with nine digs.

SHU came out swinging in the first set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The Pirates never let the Eagles closer than two points the rest of the way and took the game, 25-20.

Senior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) and junior Hannah Hugeback (Virginia, Beach, Va.) teamed up for a block, giving the Hall a 14-7 cushion in set two. However, American stormed back with eight unanswered to take a one-point lead. The Pirates were able to regroup and regain the lead on a Matusiak kill and built the advantage back up to six after an ace by Warren made it set point. After two scores by the Eagles, a Shelbey Manthorpe spike put SHU on top, 2-0.

The Pirates scored the first four points of the third and never looked back, coasting to a 25-15 win to finish the straight-set triumph.
