SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team put together arguably its strongest performance of the season in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-11) sweep of Hofstra on Tuesday night. The Pirates even their record to 5-5 heading into their final tournament weekend of the season.
Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) paced the attack with 14 kills and added six blocks, five coming in the second set alone. Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) filled the stat sheet once again, handing out 22 assists while posting seven kills and nine digs.
SHU wasted little time jumping all over the Pride (7-5) in set one. Freshmen Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) and Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) teamed up for a block to cap an 8-1 start for the Pirates.
With the Pirates still leading by five later in the set, Hofstra scored seven in a row to go ahead, 17-16. After trading the next five points, a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe put the score back in favor the Pirates. Matusiak blasted another kill to give Seton Hall a 23-21 advantage and the Pirates went on to take the set, 25-22.
Matusiak was key to the Hall racing out to a 15-4 lead in the second set, racking up four kills and four blocks during that stretch. The Pride never came closer than six and the Pirates cruised to a 25-18 set win.
Hofstra started the third set stronger than the previous two, holding a 6-4 lead in the early stages before SHU caught fire. The Pirates ripped off an astounding 15-1 run, including a long rally with sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.), serving up four of her career-high five aces to put the match away.
Warren had a game-high 22 digs and Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) added a season-high 14 digs to anchor the defense.
Seton Hall will host the SHU Invitational on September 16-17. The Pirates open the tournament with a pair of contests, an 11:00 a.m. match against NJIT before taking on Boston College at 6:00 p.m.
