SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team put a scare into an undefeated TCU squad, but ultimately fell 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-19) in the final match of the Seton Hall Invitational on Saturday. The Pirates fall to 7-6 and will head to Princeton on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 p.m.
Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) and sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) each had strong matches to clinch spots on the All-Tournament Team. Matusiak had 11 kills to go with 12 digs, while Warren had a match-high 25 digs a day after breaking the school's single-match mark.
Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her second straight double-double with 33 assists and a career-best 21 digs.
After trading the first six points of the contest a block by Matusiak and Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.) put SHU up for good in the first set. The Pirates led by as many as six points and let the Horned Frogs (13-0) only come within two as they took the first set, 25-20.
TCU held a slim advantage for much of the first part of the second set until rallying for seven unanswered to extend its lead, 22-13, and never looked back to even the match.
Set three was the most hotly contested frame of the weekend. Once again, the Horned Frogs maintained a slim cushion for much of the early stages, but the Hall stayed within striking distance. The Pirates finally tied the score off of a bad set by Megan Munce and then took a 24-23 lead after another TCU miscue.
After a timeout by the Horned Frogs, Kristen Hester recorded back-to-back kills to put TCU back on top, but Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) responded with a spike of her own to even things up, 25-25. However, the Horned Frogs had one more push left and took the match-lead after kills by Munce and Hester.
Trailing 16-12 in the fourth, Seton Hall scored three of the next four to pull within two points, but TCU scored the next four and went on to win the set and match.
