MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Seton Hall volleyball team took a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20) victory at West Virginia on Sunday to begin BIG EAST play 2-0 for the first time since 1994. The Pirates, who improve to 10-6 overall, will remain on the road for a Tuesday night tilt at Fordham at 7:00 p.m.
Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) had yet another strong match, recording a match-high 18 kills to go with 11 digs. Freshman Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) posted another double-doube with 17 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) set a career-high for the scond straight match with 44 assists. Sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had a 26-dig performance.
SHU jumped out to an 11-7 advantage in set one gave off of a Matusiak slam. A 7-0 spurt by the Mountaineers turned the lead into a two-point deficit at 14-12. The Pirates then answered with eight unanswered to regain the lead for good as they took the first set, 25-19.
West Virginia controlled set two from the start and doubled up Seton Hall, 16-8. The Pirates were able to pull within four, but the slow start was too much to overcome as the Mountaineers evened the set with a 25-19 set win.
With Warren serving, SHU took a 5-1 lead to start the third set. WVU settled in and would take a 9-8 lead, but that would be short-lived. Stacey Manthorpe secured the next point with a kill and the Pirates regained an eight point cushion with Warren handling the service duties to take a 2-1 lead in the contest.
In set four, the Hall maintained a small margin for much of the way, but the Mountaineers would hang close. A mini 4-0 spurt but West Virginia on top, but like the third set, the Pirates had a quick response. SHU came out of a timeout with three kills in a row to regain the lead, and back-to-back attack errors by the Mountaineers gave the Pirates the lead for good.
