SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team swept LIU, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14), in its home opener on Tuesday night. The Pirates (3-3) were led once again by the superb play of Megham Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) who recorded 13 kills with a .400 attack percentage.
Sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) anchored the defense with 19 digs. Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) dished out 28 assists and picked up 15 digs to go with six kills. Freshman Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) and senior Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.) also had strong games, with Manthorpe posting nine kills and Bonk contributing six blocks.
Set one went back-and-forth and saw the score tied seven times. With the score 13-13, three straight miscues by the Blackbirds (1-6) gave SHU the cushion they needed. LIU would close within one on three occasions, but the Pirates did not relinquish the lead and a kill by Bonk gave the Hall a 25-20 set victory.
The Pirates scored the first four points of the second frame and built a 20-13 lead after a Matusiak slam. Despite a 9-3 run by the Blackbirds to make it 23-22, Seton Hall held on after key attacking error and another score by Matusiak put the Pirates ahead in the match, 2-0.
After another solid start by the Pirates, back-to-back kills by Hanna Gibeau cut the Hall's lead to 10-9. From there, a 7-2 rally extended the advantage to five and the Pirates never looked back, taking the set, 25-14.
Seton Hall returns to tournament play this weekend at the Hokie Invitational. The Pirates take on Tennessee at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9.
