MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) teamed up to score 47 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped a 79-63 decision at West Virginia on Tuesday. The Pirates are now 7-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Morris followed up a career-night at Marquette with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while handing out five assists to tie a personal-best. Crew dropped in 23 points and was 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.
Christal Caldwell led four Mountaineers (12-4, 3-1) in double-figures with 18 points and nine rebounds.
A pair of free-throws by Crew made it 12-9 with 11:36 left in the first half, but the WVU held SHU without a field goal for nearly six minutes to extend the lead to 23-9. With the Pirates still trailing by 11, Morris and Brooke Hampton traded three-pointers on four consecutive possessions to maintain the cushion as the Mountaineers led by 19 at the break.
Asya Bussie gave West Virginia its largest lead of the game, 53-29, with 15:21 left in regulation before the Pirates made one last comeback bid. SHU's full court pressure forced six turnovers to bring the Pirates within 63-50 at the 6:34 mark. However, the Mountaineers engineered an 8-2 spurt to bring the lead back up to 19 with just under four minutes to go.
Junior Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) converted a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line extended to make it 71-58, but it would be too late as WVU took the victory.
The Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the floor and 10-of-18 from downtown. SHU hit on 43.3 percent in the second half as they outscored WVU, 42-39, in the final 20 minutes. The Hall forced 14 second half turnovers, while committing just 13. WVU held a 26-12 advantage in points in the paint.
The Pirates return to Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday, January 14, to face USF at 4:00 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Seton Hall Ticket Office at (973) 275-HALL or via email at tickets@shu.edu.
