PIRATES' STATUS
Seton Hall was beaten by USF, 68-49, on Saturday. The Bulls led wire-to-wire and jumped out to a 19-6 start to set the tone. The Pirates shot just 27.3 percent from the field, while USF converted on 42.0 percent shooting. Senior Jasmine Crew scored a game-high 22 points after knocking down 10-of-12 from the foul line. Senior Tajay Ashmeade pulled down 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action off the bench for her seventh double-figure rebounding game of the season.
ORANGE'S STATUS
Syracuse dropped a 69-42 decision at No. 17 Georgetown on Sunday to fall to 1-4 in BIG EAST play. The Orange committed 31 turnovers in the game, leading to 38 points for the Hoyas. Trailing 41-13 at the half, SU stepped up offensively, knocking down 11-of-30 from the floor, but the slow start proved to be too much to overcome. The Orange did manage to hold a 46-37 edge on the glass. Kayla Alexander posted 13 points and 10 boards, while Iasia Hemingway scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half.
CREW POISED TO SET FREE-THROW RECORD
With her 114 free-throws made this season, Jasmine Crew is just 17 away from setting the single-season record with at least 12 more games to play. Kandice Green set the mark of 130 in the 2009-10 season.
FIVE-FINGER DISCOUNT
One of the bright spots for the Pirates of late has been their increse in forcing turnovers. Against #3 Notre Dame, SHU registered a season-high 13 steals, including a career-high four from Alexis Brown. In the three of their last four games, the Pirates have posted double-figure swipes, which has launched them as one of the best in BIG EAST games.
MAGNIFICENT MORRIS
Junior Brittany Morris poured in a career-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting at Marquette on Jan. 7. It's the fourth time this season she's set a personal best in scoring this season. She followed that up with a 24 point performance at West Virginia on Jan. 10.
A CHANGE OF PACE
For the fifth time in six games, head coach Anne Donovan shuffled her starting lineup. Junior Terry Green made her first start of the season last Saturday against USF and freshman Alexis Brown made her second straight start in the backcourt.
CREW IN ELITE COMPANY
Senior Jasmine Crew nearly single-handedly brought SHU back from a halftime deficit at Memphis after scoring the first 12 points of the second frame on her way to a game-high 33 points. It marks her second 30-plus point game of the year. She is just the second player in program history to have a pair of 30-point games in a season, joining Geraldine Saintilus who accomplished the feat in the 1988-89 season.
BEAST OF THE BOARDS
Senior Tajay Ashmeade posted her sixth double-figure rebounding game of the season after grabbing 12 in 19 minutes off the bench against USF. Ashmeade's 21 boards against William & Mary on Dec. 21 is tied for the highest by any BIG EAST player this season. She is the only current Pirate to have a double-figure rebounding game this season.
ALL THAT JAZZ
Sophomore Jazzmine Johnson made her season debut on Dec. 21 against William & Mary after missing the first 12 games of the season while recovering from offseason knee surgery. The guard scored two points in 16 minutes off the bench.
PIRATES DROWN SEAWOLVES
The Hall put together its best defensive effort of the season against Stony Brook on Dec. 17. The Pirates limited the Seawolves to just 11 field goals, which is the lowest total makes by an opponent since Nov. 25, 2001, when they held Sacramento State to nine field goals. Stony Brook was also 0-for-3 from downtown, which marked the first time since SHU did not allow a three-point goal since Jan. 3, 2009 against Notre Dame.
