SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped a 71-59 decision to #23 DePaul on Saturday afternoon. Junior Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) was a perfect 7-for-7 from downtown to tie the program record for three-pointers made in a single-game.
Green did not hit a shot from inside the arc and finished with 21 points to tie a career high. Her exploits from three-point range were the best by a Pirate player since Debbie Hartnett hit seven triples against Hofstra on December 17, 1988.
Senior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) reached double-figure rebounds for the fourth straight contest after posted a game-high 11 boards.
Jasmine Penny led the Blue Demons (16-6, 4-4) with 19 points.
The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams with the Blue Demons hitting on just 29-percent and SHU converting on a 25-percent clip. A second chance layup by Ashmeade gave the Pirates a 9-4 early advantage, but DePaul answered with a 15-3 run to take a four-point lead with 10:10 left in the half.
Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) cut the deficit to 21-19 with a jumper with the shot clock winding down at the 2:26 mark end a scoreless drought of nearly seven minutes. The Blue Demons closed the half with six of the final eight points to hold a 27-21 cushion into halftime.
DePaul scored two quick buckets to push the margin to ten just 1:13 into the second half. Penny gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the game, 43-28, after a lay-in with 14:25 to go. A pair of three's by Green sparked a 10-2 run to pull Seton Hall within 52-51 with just over seven minutes remaining, but a Katherine Harry putback killed the rally.
After a pair of misses by the Pirates, Brittany Hrynko drilled a three from the left wing with 5:12 on the clock. Green responded with a long-ball of her own, but Hrynko answered right back with a deep three to make it a two-possession game and effectively killed the Pirate's comeback bid.
The squads shot much better in the second half as DePaul knocked down 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) from the floor. The Pirates shot a respectable 45.7 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Blue Demons were 16-of-20 from the foul line, while the home team went 2-of-3. SHU held a 46-36 edge on the boards.
The Pirates will travel to the City of Brotherly Love on Tuesday, January 31, to take on Villanova at the Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
