VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team could not climb out of a 15-point first half deficit as they fell at Villanova, 62-53, on Tuesday night. Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) scored 17 of her 24 points in the second half to lead the Pirates, who drop to 7-16 overall and 0-9 in BIG EAST play.
Crew also added a career-high nine rebounds in the contest. Junior Alexandra Maseko (Harare, Zimbabwe) pulled down eight boards as well.
Lauren Burford had 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from downtown. Laura Sweeney chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Wildcats raced out to a 10-2 advantage and pushed the margin to 23-8 after an Emily Suhey three-pointer with 10:58 before halftime. The triple was one of six Villanova knocked down in the first half.
SHU settled in defensively, forcing several turnovers and long possessions for the Wildcats. Eventually, the shots started falling as well and Crew scored five points down the stretch to guide a rally to cut the deficit to 28-21 at the break.
Crew scored the first four points of the second half to pull the Pirates within three with 18:35 remaining, but back-to-back three-pointers by VU pushed the lead back up to 34-25, forcing a Seton Hall timeout with 17:41 on the clock.
A steal and layup by Crew capped six unanswered scored by Pirates to make it a one-possession game again with 15:25 to go. The Hall crept within two 35-33 after a Jazzmine Johnson (Glen Dale, Md.) pull-up jumper with 14:35 remaining, but Sweeney answered with a layup in the post and followed with a dagger three-pointer to balloon the lead back up to seven points at the 13:02 mark.
The Wildcats continued to knock down shots from beyond the arc and extended the lead to 51-39 before Crew made one last bid to bring the Pirates back. The senior guard scored SHU's next eight points to make it 54-47 with 4:12 to go.
Villanova converted on two straight buckets and then held the Pirates scoreless for over two minutes to preserve the win.
Despite playing the game with four guards most of the way, SHU held a 40-31 advantage on the boards and outscored the Wildcats, 28-12, in the paint. Villanova went 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) from three-point range.
The Pirates return to Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday, February 4, against St. John's at 2:00 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Seton Hall Ticket Office at (973) 275-HALL or via email at tickets@shu.edu.
