MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team was edged, 69-60, by Marquette on Saturday night. The Pirates dropped to 7-10 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST play.
Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) poured in a career-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) netted 12 points and dished out five assists.
Katherine Plouffe led Marquette with 20 points, grabbed seven boards, and added five assists.
SHU dominated the opening minutes of the game, racing out to a 21-10 lead with 12:22 left in the first half, guided by 13 points from Morris. The Golden Eagles (10-6, 1-2) crept back in and cut the deficit to 22-18 after Katie Young's third three-pointer of the half before closing the half on a big run.
A Morris runner in the lane at the 6:16 mark would be the last points the Pirates would score in the half as Plouffe scored eight in a row to spearhead a 14-0 run to give Marquette a 32-26 lead heading into the half.
SHU's drought lasted until a putback by Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) at the 13:48 mark of the second half, but by that time the deficit was 44-28. The Pirates trailed by as many as 18 points, but made a late comeback bid on the strength of four three-pointers by Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.).
SHU converted on four in a row from downtown to pull within 54-48 with 7:03 to go, but could not get any closer and the Golden Eagles held on for the win.
The Pirates shot 52.9 percent from three-point range, but converted on just 37.5 percent of their field goals. Marquette hit 56.3 percent from the floor and was 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.
The Pirates will stay on the road to take on West Virginia on Wednesday, January 10. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
