SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team mounted a spirited second half comeback on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell short against visiting Cincinnati, 54-48.
The Hall (7-20, 0-13) outscored the Bearcats in the second half. It is the second time they have accomplished this in their last three contests.
Cincinnati (14-12, 5-8) has now won three consecutive games.
Both teams started out slow offensively, but the Bearcats held an 8-4 advantage with 12:34 on the clock. Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) ended a seven minute scoring drought with a runner, but SHU still trailed by eight with 6:27 remaining. Dayeesha Hollins gave the Bearcats its largest lead of the half, 25-12, with 2:32 and Cincy took a ten-point lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Bearcats scored six of the first eight points and a Jeanise Randolph layup gave UC their largest lead of the day at 34-18 with 16:56 left to play.
A resilient Pirates squad refused to go quietly as junior Terry Green (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored five straight points to cut the deficit back to 38-28 at the 10:16 mark.
Following four straight points from Cincinnati, a fast break layup that resulted in an old-fashioned three-point play from senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) jump-started a run for SHU.
Crew, Green and senior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) combined to orchestrate a 14-3 run for the Pirates, capped by a second-chance layup by the senior point guard that narrowed the score to 45-42 with 2:24 left in the game.
Cincinnati senior Bjonne Reaves found the mark from deep with the shot clock running down on the ensuing possession, pushing the Bearcats' advantage back to six.
Cincinnati struggled from the foul line in the final minutes, but made enough to hold off a determined SHU squad and secure the victory.
Crew led all scorers with 19 points, adding to her school-record total for free-throws made in a single season by going 7-for-7 from the stripe. Ashmeade finished the game with seven points and seven rebounds.
Hollins paced Cincinnati with 16 points.
The Pirates will travel down the turnpike to face in-state rivals Rutgers on Tuesday, February 21. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
