PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team snapped a 16 game losing streak with a 63-39 victory at Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) had 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack that saw eight players score at least four points.
Senior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and added eight points. Junior Terry Green (Bridgwaters, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points.
Ashlee Anderson scored 11 points to lead Pitt.
After a back-and-forth start, SHU (8-21, 1-14) pulled away with a 12-2 run to take a 22-12 lead with 7:54 remaining in the first half. The Panthers (8-20, 0-15) trimmed their deficit to seven, but the Pirates outscored Pitt 7-2 over the final 5:18 to take a 31-19 advantage into the break.
Seton Hall's defense was tremendous in the second half and held the Panthers without a field goal for the first 10:40 of the second half. At that point the Pirates had extended the lead to 48-22 and remained in control the rest of the way.
The victory also halted a 19-game BIG EAST regular season losing streak, dating back to last year.
SHU shot 39.1 percent from the floor, while limiting Pittsburgh to 29.8 percent shooting. The Hall also dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Panthers 45-30.
The Pirates return to Walsh Gymnasium on Monday, February 27 against #18 Louisville to wrap up the regular season. Prior to the game, Seton Hall will honor senior Tajay Ashmeade and Jasmine Crew.
