WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team dropped a hard fought, 56-51, decision to #14 Georgetown on Wednesday evening. Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) broke the program's single-season record for free-throws made in a season and led the Pirates (7-18, 0-11) with 20 points.
Crew now has 135 makes from the charity stripe, breaking the mark previously set by Kandice Green during the 2009-10 campaign. The All-BIG EAST candidate now has 453 points this season, which ranks her seventh on the single-season list.
Sugar Rodgers paced GU with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Six quick points by Rodgers gave the Hoyas (19-5, 8-3) an early 10-3 advantage with 14:11 left in the first half. The Hall responded with the next five points, but Rubylee Wright answered with a three to restore the five-point cushion with 12:50 to go.
Georgetown methodically built the lead up to 31-16 at the 3:09 mark after Rodgers third three-pointer of the half. The Pirates finished out the half strong defensively, holding the Hoyas scoreless for the remainder of the period and cut the deficit to 12 heading into the break.
Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) hit back-to-back treys to start the second half to pull the Pirates within 31-25 just 1:25 in. Another three-point play by Morris made it a five-point game, but GU canned another three-pointer on the next possession to halt the momentum.
A put-back by Rodgers made it 43-30 with 10:30 left in regulation and five minutes later, she knocked down a jumper from the corner to put the Hoyas ahead by 16, but SHU had one last rally left.
Crew sparked a 10-0 run with six points to pull the Pirates within 50-44 with 2:48 remaining. Georgetown hit four straight free-throws to push the margin to 10 points with just over 90 seconds left, not leaving the Pirates enough time to complete the comeback.
SHU held the Hoyas without a field goal over the final 5:08 of the game. GU shot 38 percent from the floor, while the Pirates hit on 34 percent.
Up next for the Pirates is a trip to Providence on Saturday, February 11. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
