PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore setter Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) was named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason team, while the Seton Hall volleyball team was picked to finish seventh by the conference, as announced today by the conference office. The Pirates finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in the 2011 regular season standings.
Manthorpe was a second team All-BIG EAST selection after an outstanding freshman campaign. She averaged a team-high 8.58 assists per set was third on the team in kills (209) and second on the club in digs (300). The standout sophomore also posted four triple-doubles in 2011, which was the third highest total by any Division I player. She is the only player in the program's history to achieve the feat.
Seton Hall returns four starters from a team fresh off its third straight BIG EAST Championship appearance. The Pirates welcome back sophomore Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), who finished the season with 280 kills to finish second on the club. Also returning, is standout libero Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.), who had a strong 2011 season averaging 5.07 digs per set to rank among the BIG EAST leaders.
For the second consecutive season, Louisville was crowned the early favorite by the coaches. Marquette, Notre Dame, and defending BIG EAST Champion Cincinnati round out the top-four selections.
AVCA Preseason Third Team All-American Lola Arslanbekova from Louisville was the pick for Preseason Player of the Year.
Seton Hall begins the 2012 season at the JMU Days Inn Classic on Saturday, August 25 with matches against Appalachian State and the Dukes.
