The Pirates played Old Dominion to a scoreless first half, despite being outshot by the Monarchs, 10-2. Seton Hall starting goalkeeper Michael Kuzan (Union, N.J.) stopped two shots in the opening period, and went on to finish the game with four saves.
However, Old Dominion got on the scoreboard in the 48th minute with Gideon Asante and Tim Hopkinson completing a give-and-go that resulted in the first of three scores on the night for Hopkinson.
Hopkinson's second goal of the evening came five minutes later and he completed his hat trick with a third strike in the 78th minute; he also tallied a pair of assists to finish the night with eight points.
Junior forward Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) took two of Seton Hall's four shots in the game, and had the Pirates' only shot on goal.
Friday night's game was the first meeting between Seton Hall and Old Dominion and the Monarchs were the first ranked team the Pirates have faced this season. SHU is now 24-50-9 against ranked foes dating back to the 1995 season and are 1-5-1 against squads ranked No. 15 in the country.
Seton Hall (2-3) will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9, when it faces Virginia Commonwealther University on the final day of the Old Dominion Stihl Soccer Classic at 12 p.m.
Seton Hall and VCU have matched up just four-times in their program's histories, with the Pirates leading the all-time series 3-1. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since Sept. 11, 2009, when SHU defeated the Rams, 2-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field.
