INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Coming off a nine-day break, the Seton Hall men's soccer team (3-2-4, 1-0-1 BE) drew the Butler Bulldogs (0-6-3, 0-0-2 BE), 0-0, inside Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl on Friday night.
The opening half presented a defensive slog that featured the two sides registering a combined three shots and one save. However, the Pirates found more momentum in the second stanza, maintaining a 9-to-2 shot advantage in the half. However, The Hall's lone shot on goal was saved by Butler, as were the opposition's two chances by the Pirates. Thus, as the final whistle sounded, the two sides each took a point with the scoreless draw.
With the draw, the Pirates move to 3-2-4 on the season and 1-0-1 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With over a week since the two sides last took the field, the opening 45 minutes of this BIG EAST clash felt rich with rust from both teams. While the majority of the half was spent in a midfield slog, the Bulldogs outshot The Hall 2-to-1 in the opening frame. One of those shots, which came from distance, forced a late save from Devin Armstrong to keep the match scoreless. Hubert Brysiak had a chance to take the lead on a header in the dying moments of the half, but it was not to be. The ball just sailed over the crossbar, sending the two sides to the break locked in a scoreless stalemate.
Out of the break, the Pirates found a new level offensively, stressing the Bulldogs' defense in the process. A flurry of corners and free kicks handed the Pirates multiple chances in the box, but The Hall remained unable to capitalize on any of them.
However, once the match cleared the 60-minute mark, Butler began to regain momentum, pressuring the Pirates on the counterattack. Ultimately, Armstrong was again called upon to make a save on a dangerous chance. Unphased, the experienced keeper handled the ball with ease to quell the chance.
As the buzzer approached, The Hall had one more chance to snatch a road victory. Joaquin Brizuela collected himself and launched a ball, but the Bulldogs blocked it, sending the ball ricocheting toward the midline. After one final defensive stand, the Pirates secured a single point as the 90-minute mark arrived with the 0-0 draw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Pirates will return to home to Owen T. Carroll Field on Tuesday, October 6, to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the match being broadcast on ESPN+.
