SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - On Sunday, January 27th, Seton Hall University will host the 21st annual New Jersey National Girls and Women in Sports Day awards luncheon at the Richard Regan Athletics and Recreation Center on the university's campus. The 12 p.m. luncheon, held prior to the Seton Hall vs. Rutgers women's basketball game at 2:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium, will be held in the Richard and Sheila Regan Field House.
The 27th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sport Day (NGWSD) is officially recognized on Feb. 6th, 2013. NGWSD celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, NGWSD is honored in all 50 states. This year's theme is, "Girls in sports. An Investment in the Future."
At the luncheon, two Honor Award winners will be recognized for their outstanding achievements in athletics and contributions to women's sports in New Jersey, Cindy Cohen, the Associate Director of Athletics at William Paterson University who has been involved in coaching and administration in New Jersey for thirty years and Danyle Heilig, who in her fourteen year tenure as Head Field Hockey Coach at Eastern High School, has won 14-consecutive state titles. The Outstanding Athlete Awards will also be presented to one individual from each high school, junior college, and college in attendance.
At halftime of the game, the NJAIAW will present "Woman of the Year" awards to one outstanding athlete from each college and university in the state. The awards are based upon athletic excellence, academic success and community service.
Participating organizations this year include the Garden State Athletic Conference, the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the New Jersey Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, Seton Hall University, and the Women's Sports Foundation.
Approximately 150 student-athletes from New Jersey's high schools, colleges and universities will be honored at the celebration. One of the largest events in the state to recognize women's athletics, approximately 800 people are expected to attend the festivities.
This year's special feature is that the NJAIAW will be collecting donations for the Robin Hood Foundation to support victims of Hurricane Sandy. Our personal theme, "Jersey Strong," speaks to the fortitude of the young ladies being honored as well as the residents of New Jersey to overcome the hardships placed upon them as a result of the devastation Hurricane Sandy left behind (http://www.robinhood.org/rhsandy). Donations will be accepted throughout the event and the women's basketball game.
