ABOUT THE MATCHUP Seton Hall controls the all-time series against Syracuse, leading the Orange 28-24 in 52 all-time meetings. Syracuse has won the last five head-to-head matchups, including a narrow, 70-66, victory over Seton Hall last season in South Orange. Seton Hall and Syracuse have met in the BIG EAST Tournament in two of the last three seasons, with Syracuse winning both games.
SETON HALL STATUS A number of streaks ended as Seton Hall picked up a 45-42 win over rival Rutgers University on Jan. 27. The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak in the BIG EAST and a 12-game skid to Rutgers that lasted 11 seasons. Senior Brittany Morris scored a team-high 19 points and redshirt sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons scored 11 points with five assists in the SHU victory. The Pirates held Rutgers to one field goal over the final 8:23.
SYRACUSE STATUS Syracuse is 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST but the Orange have lost two of their last three games, most recently a 64-59 setback at Villanova on Saturday. Senior Kayla Alexander, who became the all-time leading scorer in Syracuse women's basketball history in the loss at Villanova, has 1,791 career points and is averaging a team best 17.9 points per game this season.
PIRATES SNAP STREAK WITH WIN OVER RUTGERS Seton Hall put a stop to a 12-game losing streak to in-state rival Rutgers University with a 45-42 victory over the Scarlet Knights on Jan. 27. It was the Pirates' first win over Rutgers in exactly 4,000 days, since a 61-51 win in South Orange on Feb. 13, 2002. Senior Brittany Morris scored a game-high 18 points and redshirt sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons had 11 points and five assists in the win. Seton Hall held Rutgers to 1-for-12 shooting over the final 8:23.
MORRIS NAMED TO WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Senior guard Brittany Morris was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Jan. 28, after averaging a team-best 17 points per game in a 1-1 week for Seton Hall. She scored 19 points on 3-for-5 long-range shooting in the Pirates' 45-42 victory over Rutgers on Jan. 27, and led the team with 15 points and three three-pointers against USF on Jan. 22. It is the first time in her career Morris earned a weekly conference award and she is the second SHU student-athlete to receive the accolade this season.
CAUGHT IN A WEBB Junior center Brittany Webb swatted a career-high four shots in Seton Hall's 45-42 win over Rutgers on Jan. 27. The four blocked shots were the most in a single game for a Seton Hall player this season and the highest individual total since Tajay Ashmeade recorded four blocks against William & May on Dec. 21, 2011.
BUILDING BLOCKS Seton Hall recorded a season-high eight team blocks, led by junior Brittany Webb (4) and senior Alexandra Maseko (3) in its win over Rutgers on Jan. 27, which is the most blocks in a single game for the Pirates since they recorded 10 against Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 11, 2011.
NEARING THE MIDWAY POINT Seton Hall will have its BIG EAST bye week following its game at Syracuse on Jan. 30, which coincidentally will come at the midway point of the Pirates' BIG EAST season. With a 3-4 conference record heading into the game, the Pirates have the most wins to start a BIG EAST season since 2008 when they went 3-3 to start conference play.
800 AND COUNTING FOR MORRIS With a team-high 15 points against USF on Jan. 22, senior guard Brittany Morris eclipsed 800 points for her career. She has scored 830 points over her three-plus seasons at Seton Hall and is averaging 8.4 points per game in 99-career games played. This season she leads the Pirates with 13.0 points per game which ranks 22nd in the BIG EAST.
RICHARDSON-SMITH PROVIDES BIG BOOST Freshman forward Tabatha Richardson-Smith has shown a knack for coming off the bench and giving the Pirates a big offensive boost. She tied for the team lead with 15 points in 20 minutes of action against USF on Jan. 22, marking the fourth time this season she has scored in double figures and the third time she has scored at least 15 points. Richardson-Smith also tied her season-high with three three-point field goals.
ALL-AROUND ALEXIS BROWN Versatile sophomore guard Alexis Brown has continued to prove she can be a factor for Seton Hall every night, regardless of whether or not she scores the basketball. Brown fills up the stat sheet nearly every game, ranking second in rebounding (5.4 rpg), third in assists (56), second in steals (32) and third in minutes per game (27.6).
SIMMONS SEES STREAK COME TO AN END Redshirt-sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons saw her 10-game double-digit scoring streak come to an end when she tallied three points against USF on Jan. 22. The 10-straight double-figure games were a personal record for the Pirate point guard, and she has 20 double-figure scoring games in her career. She averaged 15.0 points and 4.7 assists per game during that 10-game stretch.
TERRY GREEN FOR THREE Sharp shooting senior Terry Green led the Pirates in scoring against Georgetown on Jan. 19, accumulating a season-high 17 points on a season-best five three-point field goals. She received the start and shot 5-for-13 from three-point range in 29 minutes; her 13 three-point field goal attempts tied the school record previously set by Cecilia Lindqvist against Rutgers on Jan. 8, 2000.
PIRATES SET NEW PROGRAM RECORD FOR THREE-POINT ATTEMPTS Seton Hall tied its season-high with nine made three-point field goals when it faced Georgetown on Jan. 19, which also ties for the fifth-most in program history. The Pirates also attempted a season-high 30 three-pointers, which set a new school record, breaking the old mark of 26 set three times before, including earlier this season against Wyoming on Nov. 23.
GREEN NEARING 600 CAREER-POINTS Senior Terry Green needs just two more points to reach 600 for her career. She passed 500-career points in the Pirates' season opener against NJIT on Nov. 9, and is averaging 5.5 points per game this season.
SIMMONS DISHING THE ROCK Redshirt-sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons dished out eight assists against Georgetown on Jan. 19. SINGLE-SEASON FREE THROWS Senior guard Brittany Morris is one of the nation's leaders in three-point shooting and she is currently turning in one of the most efficient single-season free throw efforts in program history. She is 54-for-65 (83.1 percent) from the line this year which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST and 66th in the nation and is the eighth-best single-season mark in Seton Hall history.
WEBB SHINES UNDER THE BRIGHT LIGHTS Junior center Brittany Webb enjoyed one of her most productive games of the season when the Pirates took on St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 12. She finished the game with a season-high seven points while leading Seton Hall with six rebounds.
WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS ARENA When Seton Hall faced St. John's University on Saturday, Jan. 12, it was a truly unique experience for the Pirates as the contest took place at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, as a part of a St. John's men's and women's hoops double header. It was the first time in program history the Pirates played at game at Madison Square Garden.
MASEKO NAMED TO HONOR ROLL Senior forward Alexandra Maseko was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Jan. 7 after recording a double-double with a career-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the Pirates' BIG EAST opening win over Pittsburgh on Jan. 5. It marked the first time in her career Maseko earned conference weekly accolades and the first time this season Seton Hall has landed a player on the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
THAT'S A GOOD START The Seton Hall women's basketball team won its BIG EAST home and away openers for the first time since the 2007-08 season, which was also the last time the Pirates got off to a 2-0 start in conference play.
BIG ROAD WIN Seton Hall's 64-56 victory at Cincinnati on Jan. 9 was its first BIG EAST road win since a 51-44 decision at Cincinnati on Feb. 12, 2011. It was also the Pirates' largest margin of victory in a road BIG EAST contest since a 55-47 win at West Virginia on Feb. 4, 2009.
STRONGEST HALF OF THE YEAR It was strong second-half shooting that helped the Pirates hold off Cincinnati and pick up a 64-56 win over the Bearcats on Jan. 9. Seton Hall shot 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) from the field in the second half of that game, the best single-half field goal percentage of the season for the Pirates.
PIRATES PASS BIG EAST WIN TOTAL With its 64-56 victory over Cincinnati on Jan. 9, Seton Hall improved to 2-0 in the BIG EAST and eclipsed its conference win total from each of the last three seasons in the process. The Pirates had only garnered one BIG EAST regular season win dating back to the 2009-10 season.
THREE-STRAIGHT FOR MASEKO Finishing with 10 points in the Pirates' 64-56 win at Cincinnati on Jan. 9, senior Alexandra Maseko completed a stretch of three-straight games scoring in double figures. ANNE DONOVAN ACCEPTS HEAD COACHING JOB WITH CONNECTICUT SUN Head women's basketball coach Anne Donovan will be leaving her post at Seton Hall to assume the same position with the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA. Donovan, who is in her third season with the Pirates, will coach the team for the remainder of the 2012-13 season before taking on her full-time role with the Sun at the conclusion of the year. Seton Hall will launch a national search for a new head women's basketball coach at the conclusion of the year.
