SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall University women’s basketball team participated in the South Mountain YMCA Youth Clinic and Gameplay Program at the South Orange Baird Courts on Monday, July 22, in South Orange, N.J.
The Pirates worked with a team of 15 kids ranging from seven to nine years of age on team concepts of offensive play and defense in addition to fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defense.
“We were working with the kids, taking them through drills, making sure they knew what they were doing and providing encouragement for them,” senior center Brittany Webb (New York, N.Y.) said. “It was really a lot of fun and it was a great way to get to spend time with teammates as well.”
“It was great, the kids were so excited to have us there and it was nice to create some new fans and give the kids a chance to see that one day, regardless of where they are right now, if they work hard they can get better and make it to the level we are at,” Webb added.
In addition to running specific drills with the kids, Seton Hall’s players helped coach Fred Ross teach his team zone offensive and defensive schemes and the groups received the chance to practice what they learned against Pirate players.
Monday afternoon’s clinic is the first of three visits the Seton Hall men’s and women’s basketball programs will be making to local YMCA facilities this week.
On Thursday, July 25, the Seton Hall men’s basketball team will visit a summer camp at Maplecrest Park in Maplewood, N.J., while that afternoon the women’s basketball team will participate in a second youth clinic and gameplay program through the South Mountain YMCA, working with a team of 10-12 year olds.
Seton Hall’s partnership with area YMCA basketball clinics and camps is part of the Department of Athletics’ H.A.L.L. Program, designed to focus on building leaders within the Seton Hall community while enhancing the quality of the student-athlete experience.
