Shelbey Manthorpe Named Preseason All-BIG EAST

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior setter Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) was named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason team and the Seton Hall volleyball team was picked to finish fourth by the conference coaches in the new-look nine-team BIG EAST.
Manthorpe was one of eight unanimous selections to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and the lone member of this year's team to also appear on the 2012 preseason team. Named to the 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team, she led the nation with eight triple-doubles and led Seton Hall with 7.59 assists per set. A strong defensive player, Manthorpe ranked second on the team with 3.06 digs per game. She was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Aug. 27 last season and earned Weekly Honor Roll distinction six times.
Seton Hall returns four starters from a team that won 18 games last season, the most since 2003. In addition to Shelbey Manthorpe, the Pirates welcome back senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) and junior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), who were both named Second Team All-BIG EAST performers in 2012. Warren was also named BIG EAST Libero of the Year.
BIG EAST newcomer Creighton was crowned the early favorite by the coaches to win the BIG EAST in 2013. Marquette and Xavier are the other two teams selected ahead of Seton Hall in the preseason poll.
Creighton's Kelli Browning and Marquette's Elizabeth Koberstein tied in the voting for Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year.
Seton Hall begins the 2013 season at the U.S. Military Academy Tournament on Friday, August 30 with a match against Alabama at noon. The Pirates will continue the tournament the following day with matches against Washington State and host Army.
