WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team took a 2-1 set lead, but mustered just 22 points over the final two sets and fell to Washington State, 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 25-16, 16-25, 6-15), at the U.S. Military Academy Tournament on Saturday.
It was the second five-set game of the day for the weary Pirates, who ended up splitting the pair of marathons. In the matinee, Seton Hall defeated Army for their first win of the season.
Sophomore Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her third double-double in as many games with a team-high 40 assists and 12 digs. In a strong all-around effort, she also tallied six kills and four blocks.
For the second straight match, Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led the Pirates in kills. The sophomore logged 13 kills and a team-best .233 attack percentage.
Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), playing with an injured shoulder played in her second match of the day after missing the season opener yesterday. She poured nine kills and 18 digs.
Seton Hall (1-2) held an 11-6 lead early in the first set, but Washington rallied with seven straight points to take a 13-11 lead. A kill by freshman Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) tied the set at 20, but the Cougars scored five of the last six points to win the set, 25-21. Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had a strong first set with six kills.
Set two was a see-saw affair which had 15 ties and eight lead changes. Throughout the set, neither team had a lead larger than three points. Seton Hall led 19-16, but Washington State scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 20. The Cougars had set point at 24-23, but Hansen's kill tied the game at 24. With the set tied at 25, the Pirates took advantage of a pair of Washington State errors, one on a set and another on an attack, and Seton Hall won set two, 27-25.
Riding a wave of momentum, Seton Hall dominated set three. The Pirates jumped out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back. The Hall never trailed in set three and won, 25-16, to take a two-sets-to-one match lead.
With their backs against the wall, Washington State began set four much like Seton Hall started set three. The Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never trailed. The Pirates chipped away and cut the lead to six at 22-16, but ultimately succumbed, 25-16, to force a decisive fifth set.
The Pirates, playing in their 10th set of the day, fell behind early. Washington State scored six of the first seven points of the set to take a 6-1 lead. After Seton Hall cut the deficit to three points at 7-4, the Cougars poured on their offense again and outscored the Pirates, 8-2, over the remainder of the set to win set five, 15-6, and the match, three-sets-to-two.
Seton Hall will return to action on Sept. 6 as it begins play at the Yale University Tournament in New Haven, Conn. The Pirates will face Colgate on Sept. 6 and both Missouri and host Yale on Sept. 7.
