CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Sophomore Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) recorded a match-high 13 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team blanked William & Mary, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-8), as part of the Cavalier Classic on Saturday.
Grammer, who's missed all but one other match this season with a lingering knee injury, collected the season-high 13 kills with just one attack error, giving her an impressive .667 attack percentage.
Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) led all players with a match-high 31 assists, while defensive extraordinaire Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) recorded a match-high 16 digs. She needs just 19 more digs to break Seton Hall's career record.
Seton Hall (4-6) dominated the match from the start. In fact, the Pirates led throughout the entire match with the exception of brief 1-0 leads by William & Mary to start the second and third sets.
A block by sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave Seton Hall a 6-1 lead to begin the match. William & Mary cut the lead to four at 11-7, but the Pirates scored three of the next four points to boost their lead to 14-8. Leading 18-11, Seton Hall scored the final seven points of the first set to trounce the Tribe, 25-11, in set one.
The second set was much of the same as the Pirates scored four of the first five points to take an early 4-1 lead. Up 7-3, Seton Hall scored three straight and Hansen's ace extended its lead to 10-3. The Pirates dominated the rest of the way as William & Mary never cut the lead to less than six points. Seton Hall won set two, behind five kills from Grammer, 25-14, and took a commanding two-sets-to-one match lead.
In set three, the Pirates emphatically put the Tribe away. With the score tied at six, Seton Hall scored 13 straight points and closed the match with a remarkable 19-2 run. Grammer had five more kills in set three. Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) had three kills and five blocks in set three alone.
The Pirates will play one more match today, their finale at the Cavalier Classic, vs. Columbia at 4:30 p.m.
