NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Playing in its fourth five-set match in its last five matches, the Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit, but lost to Yale, 3-2 (15-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23, 9-15), Saturday as part of the 2013 Yale University Tournament.
Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led the Pirates' offense with 11 kills. Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied 37 assists. Four Pirates recorded double-digit digs, led by Stacey Manthorpe's (Merion Station, Pa.) 18 digs.
Early on, set one was tight. But with the Pirates leading, 10-9, Yale went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-11 lead. Leading 17-12, the Bulldogs scored five of the next six points to take a commanding 22-13 lead and coasted to a 25-15 first set victory.
Set two was very similar to set one. Again, the Pirates led 10-9, but the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run to take a 15-11 lead and never looked back. Leading 16-13, Yale scored six of the next seven points to take a 22-14 lead and eventually won set two, 25-17, to take a two-sets-to-none match lead.
Seton Hall (1-5) led 9-5 early in set three, but Yale went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-11 lead. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 20-16 and appeared poised to sweep the Pirates, but Seton Hall scored seven of the next eight points and a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates a 23-21 lead. Yale rallied to tie the set at 23, but a Hansen kill put Seton Hall in set point and a Bulldog attack error handed the Pirates a 25-23 set three victory.
Yale (2-1) jumped out to a 10-4 lead to begin set four and maintained a six-point lead for much of the set. Trailing 23-17, Seton Hall mounted a furious comeback, closing out the set with eight straight points. Its 25-23 win in set four tied the match at two sets apiece.
Seton Hall never led in set five, however. Yale scored early and often and took a 10-5 lead. The Pirates cut the deficit to 12-9, but the Bulldogs scored the last three points to win set five, 15-9, and the match, three-sets-to-two.
The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, September 11 when they make the short trip down to Piscataway, N.J. to face the newly designated non-conference foe, Rutgers. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
