NEW YORK - Helping guide the Seton Hall University women's basketball team to a pair of road victories last week, redshirt junior point guard Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Monday it was announced by the league office.
It is the second time this season Simmons has been selected for the BIG EAST Honor Roll and the third time overall she received a weekly conference accolade; she was also named the BIG EAST Player of the Week back on Jan. 13.
Seton Hall was able to push its BIG EAST record above .500 and extend its winning streak to three-straight thanks to wins at Xavier and Providence last week, and Simmons was there orchestrating the offense from the point in both victories. Playing 38 minutes per game she averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 assists per contest.
At Xavier last Tuesday night Simmons nearly recorded a double-double with 17 points and nine assists, also finishing with three steals in 38 minutes of action. Her most critical offensive moments came in the first half of that game as she helped Seton Hall keep pace with a Xavier squad that was red hot from the outside.
The Musketeers started the game shooting 8-for-11 from three and as they built a six-point lead it was Simmons coming up with buckets on three-straight possessions to keep the Pirates within striking distance; she scored 10 of her 17 points in the first half of play.
Simmons' impact was felt in a slightly different way as Seton Hall erased a 16 point second half deficit at Providence on Saturday afternoon to come all the way back and eventually hold on for a 90-87 win. She led Seton Hall with 20 points, her fourth 20-point game of the season, and dished out another eight assists, but she stepped to the free-throw line 14 times, shooting 10-for-14 from the stripe.
Simmons is enjoying her best individual season in a Seton Hall uniform and is steadily climbing up a number of career lists as well. She ranks second on the team averaging 16.1 ppg, which ranks seventh in the BIG EAST, and she leads all active SHU players with 861-career points.
As a facilitator she has never been better, ranking first in the BIG EAST and No. 19 in the nation in assists, averaging 6.3 per contest. Her eight assists in the win over Providence on Saturday increased her career tally to 307, which ranks ninth all-time at Seton Hall.
In terms of getting to the free throw line Simmons remains on pace to be one of the Pirates' all-time leaders in that category as well. Her 117 made free throws this season rank seventh all time, and she is 51 shy of the single-season record. Simmons moved up to sixth in school history with 272 made free throws in her two-plus year career; Dana Wynne (1993-97) holds the school record of 362.
Seton Hall will play three of its next four games in Walsh Gymnasium starting with a key conference showdown with Creighton on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
