SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall senior Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Senior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Rubin spearheaded a Pirates' defense that stifled Creighton's high-scoring attack on Friday. Seton Hall recorded a season-high 22 blocks against the Bluejays and was led by Rubin, who notched a career-high 12 in the Pirates' thrilling, come-from-behind, five-set victory. The middle blocker held The Hall hold Creighton's offensive attack to just .109 for the match. On Saturday, Rubin followed up her career performance with another 11 blocks in a four-set win over Georgetown. Her 23 blocks in a 24-hour span is a career-best. Rubin currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in blocks per set.
Manthorpe recorded double-doubles in both matches last week, giving her a team-leading 13 this season. The senior tallied a career-high 19 kills to go along with 12 digs and five blocks in Seton Hall's five-set win over Creighton on Friday. On Saturday, she notched a team-high 17 kills to go with 15 digs and five blocks. Her .312 attack percentage on Saturday also led the team. Manthorpe has now recorded a double-double in six straight matches. This is the third time this season she has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Marquette's Autumn Bailey was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Xavier's Kristen Mass was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Those joining Manthorpe on the Honor Roll include Creighton's Kate Elman, Xavier's Aubree Smith and both Makayla Ferguson and Belle Obert of Butler.
Senior Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) also received accolades this week. AVSR Global is a recruiting service which specializes in international prospects. Each week, they highlight an international player who excelled recently, and today chose Sekulova. The outside hitter had six kills vs. Creighton, three of which came in the decisive fifth set. Sekulova also had eight kills in Seton Hall's win over Georgetown
Rubin, Manthorpe, Sekulova and the rest of the Pirates will return to action this Friday when they travel to Chicago to face DePaul. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
