PREVIEW
Seton Hall will look to jump back into the win column in BIG EAST play when it travels to St. John's on Thursday and Providence on Saturday.
Seton Hall is coming off a pair of losses in BIG EAST play last weekend. The Pirates rallied from a two-set deficit, but ultimately fell in five sets, 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-17), to Xavier on Friday in Walsh Gym. Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a double-double with a team-high 48 assists to go with 19 digs. She also had eight blocks for a near triple-double. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a team-high 16 kills to go with 16 digs for her team-leading 16th double-double of the season. Sophomore Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) posted a team-high 24 digs. Shelbey Manthorpe had a double-double, but it wasn't enough as Seton Hall was swept by Butler, 3-0 (23-25, 14-25, 23-25), on Saturday. Butler got its revenge after Seton Hall went to Indianapolis on Oct. 3 and swept the Bulldogs on their home court. Shelbey Manthorpe finished with a team-high 36 assists to go with 10 digs and five kills. Stacey Manthrorpe had a match-high 15 kills to go with seven digs.
The losses last weekend drop Seton Hall into a three-way tie for second place with Butler and Marquette, two games behind the conference leader Creighton. Lurking in fifth place is Xavier, just one game behind the trio. Only the top four finishers in the regular season will go to Milwaukee for the BIG EAST Tournament. Fortunately, Seton Hall also has the tie-breaker over the Musketeers. Despite splitting the season series, the Pirates won more sets in the two matches, and therefore, earn the tie-breaker.
Seton Hall snapped the brief two-match skid with a non-conference victory over LIU-Brooklyn on Tuesday. Tessa Fournier recorded a match-high 29 digs as the Pirates rallied for a four sets win. With the victory, Seton Hall improves to 20-6 overall. It's only the Pirates' fifth 20-win season in program history and matches their most overall wins since winning 20 in 2003. Stacey Manthorpe had a team-high 16 kills to go with eight digs and an impressive .419 attack percentage. Her sister Shelbey Manthorpe had 46 assists, nine digs, seven blocks and five kills in a strong all-around match.
On Thursday, Seton Hall will travel to local BIG EAST rival St. John's for a 7:00 p.m. start. The Pirates won their match with the Red Storm earlier this season in five sets at Walsh Gym. Last season, Seton Hall lost in five sets at St. John's. In fact, four of the last six matches in the series have gone to five sets with the Pirates winning three. On Saturday, The Hall will travel to Providence for a 5:00 p.m. match. Seton Hall swept the Friars to open BIG EAST play this season on Sept. 24.
