PREVIEW
The red-hot Seton Hall Pirates enter this weekend's matches riding a nine-match win streak. On Friday, they'll face off in a showdown with Creighton, in a meeting between the BIG EAST's only two unbeaten teams. On Saturday, The Hall will host Georgetown.
The Pirates are coming off a perfect 3-0 week, which saw them out-last St. John's in five sets on Wednesday, sweep Butler on the road on Friday and defeat Xavier in Cincinnati in four sets on Saturday. Four Pirates reached double-figures in kills in their win over St. John's. Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) nearly recorded the program's first quadruple-double. The senior finished with a team-high 45 assists, 12 digs, eight kills and seven blocks. Her sister Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded a double-double with a team-high 18 kills to go with 11 digs. Senior Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) was a revelation in the five-setter. After not seeing action in four of the prior five matches, she erupted for a season-high 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage against the Red Storm. Both Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe had a double-doubles as Seton Hall swept Butler on Friday. Shelbey Manthorpe tallied a match-high 33 assists and tied her season-high with 21 digs. Her sister Stacey tallied a team-best 12 kills to go with 15 digs. On Saturday, Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) recorded a career-high 28 digs as the Seton Hall volleyball team won its ninth straight match with a 3-1 victory at Xavier. In a match between two of the better defensive teams in the BIG EAST, the teams combined for 160 digs in just four sets, with Seton Hall registering 83. Fournier had a match-high 28 digs to go with eight assists, narrowly missing her first career double-double. In all, five Pirates reached double-figures in digs.
In the last week, Seton Hall, which was predicted to finish sixth in the 10-team BIG EAST, has defeated St. John's, the fifth place team, Butler, the fourth place team, and now Xavier, the third place team. The Pirates improved to 15-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. It's the first time they've won their first five conference matches in program history.
This Friday, the Pirates will host Creighton, the only other currently unbeaten team in conference play. The Bluejays were the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST. Seton Hall is 1-1 all-time against Creighton with both matches played last year. Most recently, The Hall defeated the Bluejays, 3-1, in South Orange on Nov. 16. On Saturday, Seton Hall will remain at Walsh Gym and host Georgetown. The Pirates are just 10-21 all-time against the Hoyas, but have won seven of the last 10 meetings including a five-setter in Washington last October. The Hoyas were predicted to finish eighth in the 10-team conference in 2014.
