NEW YORK - Seton Hall University men's soccer freshman defender John Philbin (Emmaus, Pa.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Rookie Team, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.
It is the second-straight season the Pirates landed a student-athlete on the conference's All-Rookie list, after midfielder Samuel Geiler earned the distinction a year ago. Philbin is the seventh student-athlete in program history to be named to the All-Rookie Team.
Philbin enjoyed an impressive freshman campaign, helping anchor the Pirates' defensive line at outside back, making 14 appearances and 12 starts, including a start in all nine of The Hall's BIG EAST matches.
Philbin helped bolster a Seton Hall defensive unit that saw drastic improvement this season. After giving up 40 goals last year, including 27 in BIG EAST play, the Pirates yielded just 27 goals all season, only 16 to BIG EAST foes.
Seton Hall posted only a pair of shutouts last year, neither of which came during league play. This season, Seton Hall recorded seven shutouts, including holding three of nine league opponents without a score.
In a 1-0 win over Georgetown back on Oct. 18, Philbin started and logged 60 minutes, helping keep one of the league's greatest offensive weapons, Brandon Allen, in check throughout the game.
He played 86 minutes in a shutout victory at St. John's in the season finale last week, aiding Seton Hall's first conference road win since 2009 and the first victory at St. John's since 1990.
The Pirates also shutout Butler, Columbia, Monmouth and UMass-Lowell, with Philbin receiving the start in all four matches, with Seton Hall posting a 3-0-1 record in those contests.
The Pirates finished the season with 5-7-5 overall record and a 2-4-3 mark in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall placed seventh in the conference standings, trailing the sixth and final postseason spot by one point.
