NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior setter Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) was named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, while the Seton Hall volleyball team was picked to finish sixth by the conference coaches in the annual preseason poll.
Manthorpe earns preseason All-BIG EAST honors for a third consecutive year and is coming off a strong junior campaign. Named All-Conference for a third straight year, she was a starter in all 31 matches last season and again proved to be an all-around force for the Pirates. A co-captain, she recorded 10 triple-doubles this season, two more than when she led the nation with eight triple-doubles in 2012. Named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Nov. 18, she has also been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times. Manthorpe was named to the All-Tournament Team in all three tournaments that Seton Hall played in, the U.S. Military Academy Tournament, Yale University Tournament ant Cavalier Classic. On Nov. 16 vs. Creighton, she nearly recorded the program's first quadruple-double, finishing with 36 assists, 11 digs, nine kills and a career-high eight blocks. Manthorpe will enter her final season already ranking among Seton Hall's career leaders in both assists and digs.
Seton Hall returns all six starters from a team that won 16 games last season and finished with a record above .500 for a third straight year. In addition to Shelbey Manthorpe, the Pirates welcome back her sister, fellow senior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), who was a Second Team All-Conference selection last season. Seton Hall's lone loss was two-time BIG EAST Libero of the Year, Alyssa Warren. The Pirates will look to sophomore Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) to take over as the team's primary libero this season.
For a second straight season, Creighton was selected as the early favorite by the coaches to win the BIG EAST in 2014, receiving five first-place votes. Marquette finished a close second with four first-place votes. Xavier was the lone other conference member to receive a first-place vote, it was picked third. Butler and St. John's were selected fourth and fifth respectively. After Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, DePaul and Providence rounded out the bottom four rankings in the poll.
Marquette's Autumn Bailey was named Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year.
The Seton Hall women's volleyball team will open its 2014 season on August 29 as part of the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. The Pirates will face the tournament host, Miami, at 7:00 p.m. The following day they will play Florida Gulf Coast at 10:00 a.m. and Florida A&M at 5:00 p.m.
