Seton Hall opens the 2014 season with the 2014 Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami, August 29 and 30. The Pirates face some tough competition at the start as they face the tournament host first. The Hurricanes are coming off a 19-12 season and were particularly lethal at home, sporting a 9-3 mark. It will only be the third time in history that the teams have met with Miami winning both prior meetings. On Saturday, Seton Hall will face two more teams from the State of Florida, and both meetings will be for the first time ever. The Pirates will face Florida Gulf Coast University at 10:00 a.m. and Florida A&M University at 5:00 p.m. Florida Gulf Coast finished with a 14-19 record in 2013, while Florida A&M went 15-8.
The Pirates return all six of their starters from a team that went 16-15 in 2013, but they lost arguably the program's best defensive player ever, two-time BIG EAST Libero of the Year Alyssa Warren. The Hall will turn to sophomore Tessa Fournier to take over the libero reigns moving forward with newcomer Sarah Kenneweg backing her up.
Second Team All-BIG EAST selections Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe return to spearhead the Pirates' offensive attack. Shelbey was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for a third consecutive season earlier this month. With health and another year of maturity, the Pirates offense should take a major step forward in 2014. Seton Hall tallied 1,518 kills in 2013 and returns players responsible for 1,411 of them.
Collectively, the Pirates were picked to finish sixth in the 10-team BIG EAST Conference. Only the top four teams will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, November 28-29 in Milwaukee, Wis. Last season, the Pirates finished fifth.
TOP SETON HALL NOTES
MANTHORPE PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST
For a third straight season, Shelbey Manthorpe earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Named All-Conference for a third straight year, she was a starter in all 31 matches last season and again proved to be an all-around force for the Pirates. She led the nation with 10 triple-doubles for a second straight year and will enters her final season among Seton Hall's career leaders in both assists and digs.
PRESEASON POLL
Seton Hall was picked sixth in this year's BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last season, the Pirates finished fifth. The new-look BIG EAST features 10 teams that sponsor volleyball with the 2014 addition of Providence.
HOSTING TWO TOURNAMENTS
After taking a year off from hosting a home tournament, the Pirates will host two in 2014. The Seton Hall Invitational will run on Sept. 5-6 and welcome Cornell, Siena, Rutgers and UNLV to South Orange. Two weeks later, the Pirates will host the Seton Hall Classic, Sept. 19-20. The Hall will welcome Fordham, Dartmouth and Middle Tennessee State to campus.
PIRATES ADD KENNEWEG
Losing only one student-athlete to graduation, Alyssa Warren, Seton Hall made one new addition to the team for 2014. Libero/defensive specialist Sarah Kenneweg will suit up for the Pirates this fall. A defensive stalwart, she was named the Mongomery Gazette's Player of the Year runner-up and left her high school as its all-time digs leader.
FINE FINISH
Seton Hall is using some positive momentum heading into 2014. The Pirates are the only team in the BIG EAST to finish the 2013 season with a victory. In fact, Seton Hall won its final three matches.
