
Volleyball Opens Season With 3-0 Loss at Miami

Manthorpe a team-high 12 kills and an impressive .314 attack percentage to go with 12 digs. Sophomore Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) tallied a team-high 14 digs in her first match as the starting libero.
The Pirates started fast and jumped out to an 11-8 lead in set one, but Miami came back and used an 11-3 run to take a 19-14 lead. Seton Hall made a small run, but ultimately conceded the set, 25-20. Manthorpe and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had four kills apiece in the first frame.
In the second set, Miami dominated early on. The Pirates found themselves in a 19-12 hole, but went on a 12-5 run, and a late attack error tied the set at 24. Molly Grammer (Center Valley, Pa.) followed with a kill to give Seton Hall its first lead, 25-24, since winning the first point. Following a timeout however, the Hurricanes scored three straight points to win set two, 27-25, and take a commanding two-sets-to-none lead.
An ace by newcomer Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) scored the first point of the third set and the Pirates were off to a strong start in their attempt stave off a three-set sweep. The Pirates jumped out to a 13-8 lead, but saw Miami rebound and shrink the lead to just one at 18-17. With the set now tied at 21, the Hurricanes scored three straight points to take a 24-21 lead and held on for a 25-22 victory, completing the three-set sweep.
Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a strong all-around game. The setter tallied a team-high 31 assists to go with five digs, four kills and three blocks.
Seton Hall will resume play at the season-opening Hurricane Invitational tomorrow with a pair of matches. The Pirates will face Florida Gulf Coast at 10:00 a.m. and Florida A&M at 5:00 p.m.
