PREVIEW
Seton Hall has opened the 2014 season with wins in five of its first seven matches, a far cry from starting out the 2013 campaign with the opposite record, 2-5. Last weekend, the Pirates hosted the Seton Hall Invitational, and won three of four matches. The Pirates had won 12 consecutive sets before falling in set two of their match with UNLV. On Friday, The Hall swept both Cornell and Siena. On Saturday, it swept in-state Rutgers for the first time since 2009, before having its five-match win streak snapped by UNLV in a 3-1 loss.
Both Stacey and Shelbey Manthorpe were named to the All-Tournament Team. No Most Valuable Player was selected, but if one were chosen, it could have been Stacey Manthorpe. The senior outside hitter notched two double-doubles in four matches and led all players in the tournament in total kills. On Friday vs. Siena, Stacey became only the eighth player in Seton Hall history to record 1,000 career kills. On Saturday vs. UNLV, she tied a career-high with 18 kills and set a career-high with 26 digs.
This weekend, the Pirates will return to the road to play three matches at a familiar place, Morgantown, W.Va. The former BIG EAST member, West Virginia, is hosting the Pirates, Montana and St. Francis on Friday and Saturday. Seton Hall will open the Invitational on Friday vs. Montana. The Grizzlies have yet to win in 2014 in six matches and are registering just over 10 kills per set. The teams have never met. In Friday's nightcap, Seton Hall will face host West Virginia, which enters the tournament riding a six-match win streak. Since losing their opener, the Mountaineers haven't lost a set, cruising to a 6-1 record. Seton Hall owns a slim 11-10 all-time record against West Virginia and won the last meeting, a 3-1 victory in Morgantown in 2011. On Saturday, Seton Hall will face St. Francis (Pa.) at 4:30 p.m. The Red Flash enter the tournament with a 2-5 record and are coming off a four set loss to Youngstown State in their home opener on Tuesday. The Pirates won their only meeting with St. Francis back in 2005, a 3-0 sweep in Walsh Gym.
