The loss snaps a five-match winning streak for the Pirates and drops them to 5-2 on the young season.
Senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) also had a huge match for Seton Hall. The Pirates' setter tallied a season-high 39 assists to go with 21 digs.
For their efforts, both Manthorpes were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the score tied at four in set one, Seton Hall scored five of the next six points to grab an early 9-5 advantage. With The Hall clinging to a 15-14 lead, the Pirates scored five straight to take a commanding 20-14 lead. From there, the Rebels wouldn't get closer than four points for the remainder of the set as Seton Hall rolled to a 25-19 victory. Seton Hall attacked at a .250 clip, while holding UNLV to just .024. Stacey Manthorpe had a huge set, tallying five kills and six digs.
Set two started slowly for Seton Hall, but Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) got hot and soon the Pirates had an 8-6 lead. Trailing 10-8, UNLV scored five unanswered to take a 13-10 advantage. With the score tied at 20, Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) suffered an apparent ankle injury and did not return. The Pirates had to play the remainder of the set without a libero and it proved costly. With the score tied at 22, the Rebels scored three of the last four points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 victory.
The third set proved to be the closest of the match. UNLV used a 7-1 run to turn a 16-14 deficit into a 21-17 lead. It was the first lead of more than two points for either team in the set. Four straight points by the Pirates however, tied the set at 21. A trio of late kills by UNLV's Alyssa Wing powers the Rebels to a second straight 25-23 set win. The set featured 12 ties.
UNLV starts set four on fire, scoring four of the first five points, but Seton Hall battled back to tie the set at eight. With the score tied at 15, a kill by UNLV's Daryn Glenn gave the Rebels the lead and they would not relinquish it. The lead grew as large as five at 22-17 as the Pirates appeared to tire. UNLV won set four, 25-21, and won the match, three-sets-to-one.
A strong defensive match played by both sides, the teams combined for 217 digs in just four sets.
Freshman Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.), thrust into the libero role after Fournier's injury, tallied a career-high 18 digs in the loss.
Senior Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) registered a career-high 16 digs. Her previous career high was just six digs.
Seton Hall will return to action next weekend when it travels to Morgantown, W. Va. for three matches at the West Virginia invitational. The Pirates will face Montana and host West Virginia on Friday and St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday.
