CHICAGO - Junior Illissa Blackshear (West Orange, N.J.) recorded eight saves, seven of which came in the second half, but the Seton Hall women's soccer team was edged by reigning BIG EAST champions DePaul, 1-0, on Sunday.
Blackshear and The Hall (2-8-2, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) held the Blue Demons (9-2-2, 3-0-0 BIG EAST) to just a single goal after DePaul had opened conference play with a pair of 4-0 victories over Xavier and Creighton but a 79th minute strike from Madeline Frick proved to be the difference.
Frick finally forced one past Blackshear after DPU was awarded a free kick in the attacking third. Her direct strike found its way into the back of the net and the result marks the second-straight time that Seton Hall has been upended by DePaul by virtue of a free kick goal in the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Last season, Amber Paul broke a scoreless tie in the 85th minute with a free kick from just outside the area to help the then 15th-ranked Blue Demons squeak past The Hall in South Orange.
Senior Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) tested DePaul keeper in the 50th minute but the Blue Demons were able to keep the Pirates off the scoresheet in a wire-to-wire BIG EAST battle.
Turning Point
Frick's direct opportunity from the set piece was the first shot on goal for either team in a 13 minute span
Goals
DPU - 79th minute - Frick (3) - Direct free kick from 25 yards out
Inside The Numbers
- With eight saves on Sunday, Blackshear matched a career-high. The junior has recorded eight stops in four different matches since the start of last season, three of which have been in conference play
- Seton Hall has limited DePaul to a single goal in each of their last two meetings. In their 10 other BIG EAST contests since the beginning of the 2014 campaign, the Blue Demons have been held to one goal or less just one other time (W, 1-0 - vs. Xavier, 10/25/14).
- In two games this week, Blackshear stopped 14 of the 15 shots she faced against a pair of 2014 BIG EAST semifinalists in Marquette and DePaul
- The Hall has not conceded a goal in the run of play over its last 210 minutes of action
- Over the last four matches, the Pirates have conceded one goal or less in three. SHU has allowed a total of four goals over a span that includes shutout wins over Albany and Marquette at home
News & Notes
- Sophomore Jackie Saint John (Ridgefield, N.J.) was sent off after being issued a pair of yellow cards in a 40-second span late in the second half
- Five yellow cards were shown on the day as the two teams were whistled for 36 fouls combined
- DePaul was ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA Northeast regional poll, adding to a challenging slate for The Hall that was recently rated the 18th-toughest in the nation to this point in the year
