Singles Rally Not Enough for Tennis at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Playing its second match in less than 24 hours, the Seton Hall women's tennis team rallied to split six singles matches with hosts Navy on Saturday but the Mids claimed a narrow 4-3 victory by virtue of winning the doubles point.
The Hall (1-3) scored its first win of the spring on Friday with a 5-2 triumph over Longwood that featured five straight-set victories on the singles court and against Navy, Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden), Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) each notched another to close the two-match swing in Annapolis unbeaten.
Due to a shakeup in the lineup, the Seton Hall duo of Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) were elevated to the #1 doubles position and responded by trouncing the Mids' top pair of Sam Droop and Katie Porter, 8-1.
Navy claimed the other two doubles matchups however to take a one-point advantage into singles competition.
The deficit was extended to two before Liljekvist got The Hall on the board from the top spot with a 6-3, 6-4 result over the junior Droop who entered the day as Navy's active career wins leader with nearly 50 victories to her credit.
Klingert continued to shine at #6, leveling the score by easing past Allie Pavlansky in just four games over the minimum. Up against an opponent that was 6-1 overall and perfect in three appearances in the sixth position prior to Saturday; Klingert extended her own individual winning streak to six with the 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Mids responded by closing out points at #5 and #3 to seal the team result but Strike still went on to outlast Logan Antill in second singles action.
Strike took the first set, 6-2 but dropped the next, 3-6. The freshman prevailed, 7-5, in the decisive frame to contribute a point for the second time in as many matches.
Provided an opportunity to play multiple matches in quick succession, the Pirates showed marked improvement over their first two appearances of 2015 on the singles court. SHU amassed an 8-4 total record in singles matches against Longwood and Navy with seven wins coming in straight sets.
Seton Hall totaled only two points in its first two matches which were separated by two full weeks as the early season schedule was heavily disrupted by inclement weather.
Meetings with Binghamton and Georgetown originally slated for early February have been moved to the coming weeks and the Bearcats will serve as the final opponent in a stretch of three matches in four days that awaits The Hall.
The Pirates will open the stretch by traveling to take on rival Rutgers this Wednesday, February 25. A trip to NJIT follows (Feb. 27) before The Hall hosts Binghamton on Saturday at the Center Court facility in Morristown, N.J.
