LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The Seton Hall volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to edge Central Arkansas, 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-9), on Saturday for its first victory of the 2015 season.
The Pirates used their staunch defense, out-digging the Bears 71-to-51, to outlast them and earn the five-set victory in their second contest of the UNLV Invitational.
The Hall (1-1) won the first set easily, but struggled mightily in sets two and three. The Pirates scored only 14 points in set three, committing eight errors and only five kills. However, Seton Hall prevailed in the closest set of the match, a 25-23 must-win set four. In set five, the Pirates trailed 3-2, but used a 9-1 run to take a commanding 11-4 advantage and cruised to a 15-9 victory.
Turning Point
Seton Hall was just two points away from starting the season 0-2, down 23-22 in the fourth set. But the Pirates scored the last three points of the set to win set four, 25-23, and knot the match at two sets apiece. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) tied the set at 23 and another by freshman Cherise Hennigan (Sierra Madre, Calif.) put the Pirates in set point. A Central Arkansas ball handling error provided the last point the Pirates needed for a set four victory.
