SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) nearly erased a one-goal deficit for the Seton Hall women's soccer team against Cornell on Thursday night but the visiting Big Red held on to remain unbeaten with a narrow 1-0 victory at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Gulli's try came in the 55th minute as The Hall (0-6-2) was dictating the action despite falling behind early, but her driven shot struck the underside of the crossbar and rung back into play. Freshman Lauren Dao (Collegeville, Pa.) made a supporting run into the area and got a foot to the rebound but Kelsey Tierney was there to hang on for Cornell and preserve the slim advantage.
The Big Red (5-0-2) entered the match as one of two teams in the nation who have yet to concede a goal and moved ahead early on the strength of an effective piece of combination play from Carolyn Rouff and Tess Pullano.
Pullano played a ball into the feet of Rouff who chipped a lead pass directly into the path of Pullano inside the Seton Hall area and the sophomore was able to keep her shot low and guide it inside the near post for the decisive score.
The tally punctuated a stretch in the first nine minutes in which Cornell fired four shots but from that point, Seton Hall answered by ramping up its own attack; out-shooting the visitors, 10-to-7, the rest of the way.
After BIG EAST saves leader Anna MacLean (Thunder Bay, Ontario) got the start, junior Illissa Blackshear (West Orange, N.J.) made her first appearance of the year in the 24th minute and went on to record three stops to keep Cornell from widening the gap.
Turning Point
Cornell came out and asserted itself on the front foot early with Elizabeth Crowell totaling three shots in the first five minutes before Pullano broke through
Goals
COR - 9th minute - Pullano (1) - Slotted into low right corner off give-and-go
Inside The Numbers
- Seton Hall has now surrendered one goal or less in eight of its 11 home appearances under head coach Rick Stainton
- Dao came off the bench and was credited with three shots on goal in 63 minutes, the highest single-game total for a Pirate this season
- Blackshear, who ranked second in the BIG EAST in both goals-against average (0.93) and save percentage (.825) in 2014, has now yielded just one goal in her last 277 minutes of action; a stretch that spans over four appearances dating back to last season
- The Pirates continued a trend that has seen the attack flourish late in matches; out-shooting Cornell, 7-3, in the final 45 minutes. Four of Seton Hall's five goals on the season have come in the second half
News & Notes
- The result leveled the all-time series between The Hall and Cornell at 1-1-0 after the Pirates triumphed in the lone previous meeting during the 2010 campaign
- Freshman Delaney Suarez (Bergenfield, N.J.) and sophomore Lauren Hall (Bridgewater, N.J.) each earned their first starts of the season.
