Pirates Blank Marquette In Conference Home Opener
10/1/2016 10:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team (3-6-1, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) picked up three big league points in its conference home opener on Saturday night, blanking Marquette (3-3-3, 0-2-1) by a score of 2-0 at Owen T. Carroll Field. Jonathan Jimenez (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another to back a three-save shutout from Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany).
Jimenez got The Hall on the board early, capitalizing on a deep turnover to send home his second of the year in the 6th minute. The Pirates would take that 1-0 lead to the break before Francisco Alderete (Salta, Argentina) doubled the lead with his first career goal in the 53rd. That was all the offense the Pirates would need as Spindler stood tall throughout for his 10th career shutout.
The Hall held a resounding 17-6 edge in shots for the match, firing a total of 13 attempts in the second half. Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) assisted on both Seton Hall goals and led all players with five shots for the match.

Turning Point
Up a goal early in the second half, a beautiful link up play led to The Hall notching its second of the night and building a 2-0 lead. Arcila started the play with a long lob from the midfield circle ahead, feeding Jimenez streaking up the left side. The freshman sent a cross across the penalty area to an awaiting Alderete, who gathered on the right side before roofing a shot past MU keeper Luis Barraza.
In the 81st minute, Marquette nearly cut the lead in half when top scorer Luka Prpa served in a free kick to the head of captain John Pothast. The header appeared destined for the top right corner of the cage, but Spindler pounced at the shot and punched it away from danger to keep his shutout intact.
