NEW YORK – The Seton Hall women's basketball team was tabbed for a seventh place finish in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll as announced on Tuesday (Oct. 11) at BIG EAST Media Day.
The Pirates under fourth-year head coach Anthony Bozzella graduated four starters from last season's 23-9 squad, one that reached the NCAA Tournament for a second-straight year. In each of Bozzella's three seasons at the helm of his alma mater the Pirates have exceeded their preseason projection, including the 2015-16 campaign that saw The Hall picked fifth and finish tied for second.
The Hall returns six letterwinners in 2016-17, including starting center Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) who finished third in the league in blocked shots (2.3/g) and sixth in rebounding (6.8/g) as a junior last year. Also back are forward/center Jordan Molyneaux (Denver, Colo.) and point guard LaTecia "TT" Smith (Gardenia, Calif.), who both saw time as spot starters during their respective freshman seasons.
The Pirates will gain the services of guard JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) in '16-17, who sat out the 2015-16 campaign after transferring from Louisiana Tech. Jackson was a 2014 Conference USA All-Rookie team performer and averaged nearly 10 points per game in two seasons with the Lady Techsters. Bozzella welcomes in a seven-member freshman class, with several highly touted prospects ready to make an immediate impact.
Creighton and DePaul were chosen as co-favorites in the BIG EAST poll, followed by Marquette, Villanova, Georgetown and St. John's ahead of the Pirates. The poll was rounded out by Butler, Xavier and Providence.
The 2016-17 season kicks off on Nov. 11 when the Pirates welcome Savannah State to Walsh Gym. The non-league slate includes marquee home match-ups against Boston College and Wake Forest as well as road tests at Rutgers, Princeton and Minnesota. The BIG EAST schedule opens on Dec. 30 with a nationally-televised match-up against St. John's at Walsh Gym.
